An email from my friend's boss, so this is what workplaces are like today.... |
|
Edited on Sun Dec-05-10 11:44 PM by HEyHEY
I'm not kidding, this is what they sent....
"You did a really great job in November, involving in different projects here at the office. So, we have not deducted any money from your monthly bonus for the two sick days you took in Nov.
Have a good week."
What a fucking piece of shit. I suppose the prick is expecting a thank you too.
Edit: I should mention the "bonus" is part of your salary. They laud it over your head saying they can deduct it to keep you in line.

|
Anyone else ever hear of such a thing?

2. He makes a tiny base salary... the other half of his salary is considered "bonus" |
|
Edited on Sun Dec-05-10 11:34 PM by HEyHEY
He gets it every month, so it's part of his actual contract. They basically do it to fuck with your wages to keep you in line.

7. Ah. I've heard of that, and it sucks. Discretionary wages. |
|
I thought it was one of those once-a-year-pittance-if-you-kiss-enough-ass deals.

if it the policy of the company and the conditions your friend agreed to, that there is a deduction for sick days, it seems his boss just gave him a bonus equivalent to the value of those 2 days, no?

11. How is it sleazier than handing him $100 or what ever? |
|
There is a saying about never looking a gift horse in the mouth. What is sleazy is bitching about a favor someone does out of kindness.

You think it's kind to pay someone $800 a month garuanteed to work forty hours a week, then telling them the other $800 of their salary is a gift they should be happy to have?

18. I didn't know we were talking about |
|
the agreement he has with his employer for compensation..he isn't an indentured servant is he? I thought we were talking about an employer who waived the policy of subtracting time when not at work...yes, a favor which the employer apparently is in no way obligated to issue. What do you think the employer would do if he knew the guy was bitching about it? If it were me I would say screw this ingrate, you can bet your ass it would never happen again. How is this not looking a gift horse in the mouth?

20. Well, the point here is that |
|
Companies are getting around paying full wages with these kind of contracts. Plus, I asked him, he's allowed five sick days a year.

Your friend could get fired if this turns up during a Google search or something.
Honestly. You're putting your friend's job in jeopardy by posting this verbatim.

12. Not deducting seems like a nice thing (unless sick leave is in the contract, most people don't |
|
get paid for those days), but the whole system is pretty sleazy and I'd certainly try to avoid it.
In this case though, since it it what was agreed to, I probably would say "Thank you" if I was in your friend's position...

13. Hard to know what to think as there are unanswered questions - |
|
- such as does he have paid sick leave? If so, had he used all of his allotted sick leave for the year requiring that further absences be deducted? Is he full time? Most part time jobs don't have sick leave.
With every job I've ever had that included sick leave, once I had used it then my absence was deducted from my salary.
If his sick leave had been used then - yes - "Thank you" would be the appropriate language to the employer.

"safety" or "attendance" bonuses are usually based on your "team."
if i take a sick day, or report an on job accident, my teammate with the sick wife or child support due doesn't get his bonus either.

This job my friend has is not well paid either. He makes about $800 a month for certain... the other $800 is his "bonus" just a scumbag way to get around paying people.

19. Are torches and pitchforks really that bad of and idea? |
|
Are we really better off abandoning this tradition?
Modern day tiki torches often contain a mosquito repellent, that is pretty cool.
