Legendary Cowboys, SMU quarterback Don Meredith dies

Don Meredith, the Dallas Cowboys and SMU quarterback and Monday Night Football icon, died Sunday evening in Santa Fe, N.M. He was 72.

Meredith died at Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, a hospital spokesman confirmed this morning. The Meredith family's attorney, Lisa Fine Moses, said his wife, Susan, and daughter Mary were at his side.

Meredith had battled emphysema in recent years and suffered a minor stroke in 2004.

He was the only living Cowboys Ring of Honor member unable to attend the franchise's September 2009 inaugural game at Cowboys Stadium.

2. Oh, shit.
"Turn out the lights, the party's over" <--- Don's signature song on Monday Night Football with Frank Gifford and Howard Cosell when it started so many years ago.

He was a great one.
He had one hell of a sense of humor, and was a great football commentator.
He was my favorite football commentator, or "color man", or whatever they called him.

Who doesn't remember his back-and-forth conversations with Howard Cosell?

5. R.I.P. Dandy Don.
My grandfather was a barber in Mt. Vernon, Texas, where Don grew up. He cut his hair when he was a kid and Don had to sit on a board in the chair to add height. My grandad said that Don would whistle "like a bird" the whole time he got his hair cut. I don't know about Don's political views, etc., but I have fond memories of his play and of his commentary on Monday Night Football.

8. Loved Dandy Don.
I remember a column written years ago, after the Cowboys got blown out, and Merideth had a poor performance'

"Dallas was visited by the Four Horsemen of the Apocolypse: War, Disease, Destruction and Merideth".
