6. Good grief.
Cue the tiny violin.

There are half a dozen OPs noting that the President 'will speak'; 'is getting ready to speak'; 'is speaking' on DU.

Are you upset because no one is posting a word for word commentary to express their admiration for his speaking abilities? Wouldn't it make more sense to listen to the speech and then discuss what he said?

hate at DU these days.
I now understand how Jimmy Carter felt.

4. "Made in America".
How quaint.

And right on the heels of the New Nafta.

33. Not quaint. The companies manufacture on the US mainland.
Many of them use 100% USA made supplies to make their products. Sorry, that is not quaint, it is how we come back as an industrial power.

22. I'm trying to find info. regarding the trade agreement.
Edited on Mon Dec-06-10 02:00 PM by izzybeans
Can you point me to something that helps me understand how bad it really is?

Thanks

All I've found has been promises that it will increase jobs here and open up Korea to our exports. Is that not right? I don't see anything substantive about what's actually in the deal.

There is not there, there. All I'm finding are statements from the President, from the UAW, and some howlers from the rightwing.

I just want to read the damned thing. That's what is troubling me.

31. This was under the old terms of negotiation. published in Feb.
Edited on Mon Dec-06-10 04:51 PM by izzybeans
The rightwingosphere is using the terms crafted under Bush to claim that it will kill American jobs even though they supported it before. The study they cite was conducted under the assumptions crafted by Bush negotiators. The terms changed under Obama, it is just unclear by how much.

This seems like another poison pill. Damned if he does, damned if he don't. The unions seem on board, though and they were at the negotiating table.

He's already taking a beating over it and no one knows the specifics. I wish I thought that it was odd, if it wasn't so common.

10. Talking is fine.
Now, if he'd just back that up by getting Democratic sponsors in the House and Senate to sponsor Bills that will:

-quit giving tax breaks to corporations that send our jobs overseas.
-FINE corporations that send our jobs overseas.
-Give tax incentives to goods Made in America. The more the percentage the labor and materials come from the U.S., the bigger the tax break.
-Repeal NAFTA

Was there any indication of what ACTION he would be taking to enact this Made in America idea?

29. Yes.We have to get deep in debt getting educated up, then we innovate and invent.
Edited on Mon Dec-06-10 03:43 PM by Billy Burnett
(Then after we innovate and invent, the new "free trade" deals will ensure that the shit we innovate and invent will be manufactured elsewhere (Asia).)

34. Talking is fine.
I am seeing a lot of that on DU.

But getting up and doing is a bit more difficult. There are some wonderful companies out there. My favorite is Astees.com, I can't yell to the rafters enough about that company, it builds environmentally sensitive tees, 90% built in the USA with USA supplies, one line is built in Haiti with USA made supplies. It is companies like this that are innovating and fighting the tide of off-shoring everything. Another great teeshirt company is Atayne, it makes environmentally sensitive tees, but does not have the broad product line that Astees does. Atayne build their shirts in the USA and make the raw materials in two USA mainland plants.

If we want to bring about change, we have to do it ourselves, one small step at a time. If we depend on politicians, we will be forever disappointed.

11. He signs a free trade agreement with South Korea one week
and then makes a speech about Made in America the next week.

I wish I could trust this man. But I do not agree with that trade agreement. I do not support the free trade part of Obama's trade policy. The made in America part I like.

I still have some pots and pans that were made long ago before outsourcing. I will have them a long, long time yet. The junk made in China lasts a few years and then is gone.

12. Pres. Obama is a fine orator, but at best his words amount to little more than hot air anymore . And

at worst, hot, steaming bullshit.

Trade deals with Korea, cutting "deals" on tax cuts for billionaires, etc.

There was a time when Wal-Mart spoke of "Made in America" too... we know how that turned out.

32. I just got shipments of clothing.
My tees from Astees.com are drop dead awesome, I was just going to wear them around home and about town, but they were so awesome after I opened and washed them that I wore a thermal and under tee to work today. My trousers from All American Clothing are great also, high quality at a little less than what I would have paid for imported of the same quality. I found both companies by using a web search string "USA made products" and then reviewing the abundance of sites that popped up. Some of my new clothing is union made, some not, but all of it is great stuff. Still awaiting my handmade blanket from New England Trading Company, their small Maine based manufacturer is overwhelmed with orders - thanks to the people that found them like I did.

If we want to positively impact jobs in this country, we need to change our buying habits. Regardless of how much we buy or the price points we buy at, there ARE USA based choices out there making great products. Please find them and at least check out their stuff.
