To me way of thinking, the notion of "retraining for a new job" is a cruel joke.

To me way of thinking, the notion of "retraining for a new job" is a cruel joke.
There are no jobs.

That statement is absolutely true.

"Small business" is hiring because they're waiting for tax certainty. Another cruel joke. The truth is, they have no jobs either.

Big business isn't any help, even with all that cash (formerly OUR cash) they're hoarding. Holding out hope that big business will hire a horde of newly retrained people is simply another cruel joke.

There are no jobs.

In past "downturns" (isn't that a cute, gentle word, "downturn?" the government hired or let contracts that accomplished two things: they stimulated the economy and they allowed the feds to buy things cheaper than they might in a hot economy. Today, however, the feds are out of money. (See "big business," above). The feds are broke. They can allow all the training they like. It won't help. There are no jobs.

Extending unemployment is just another example of kicking a can down the road. People will, in this very country, find themselves at some point choosing between a rusted out urban bread truck or a suburban cardboard refrigerator box as a home.

Retraining for a new job.

What a hoot.

What a cruel joke.

There.are.no.jobs.

1. Why is it that this country can only create entitlements for the
wealthy on the backs of a jobless recovery?

17. Okay, so *you* lay it out. Where are the jobs going to come from and when?
You think there are jobs around the corner? Tell us where.

Come on. Tell us where the jobs are hidden.

This economy will soon enough eclipse the Great Depression.

The only people making money are the people who have money. The people who have YOUR money. And mine.

You okay with that?

Anyway, back to the start: where are the jobs going to come from?

18. i understood the post. some here on this site are so obtuse. are you that way on purpose!
the unemployed are blamed as lazy and not willing to work. but when you have employers who are actively avoiding hiring the unemployed only wanting people who are already employed coupled with the fact that businesses ARE NOT HIRING.... hell you have 5 people applying for every 1 job..... then it sure looks hopeless for someone in the position of being unemployed. and god forbid someone in that position ever not be upbeat and cheerful. if you don't like the post don't read it. we all need to vent our frustrations. and then we hopefully can pick ourselves up and keep moving. and others in the same boat can read a post like this and realize that they are not alone. but you keep on keepin on. because this guy just isn't as happy about feeling left behind and forgotten in the big fucking millionare bailout programs.

12. Ben Bernanke tells us that the unemployed are merely stupid, and
that THIS is why there is so much unemployment and why the rich have gotten so much richer than the not-rich.

19. The cruel fact is that while 80-90% of people do have jobs
Edited on Mon Dec-06-10 04:48 PM by stopbush
their incomes have remained stagnant, which means their buying power is diminished, which means they aren't buying goods and services that spur the creation of new jobs to meet rising demand.

This is the SYSTEMIC problem that has been caused by the massive shift of wealth from the middle class to the hands of the privileged few. The fact is that giving more and more money to fewer people at the top while the middle class remains stagnant means that the demand for goods and services drops. No matter how rich you are, you are only going to buy so many houses and cars and yachts and vacations and jewelry and food and furniture. At some point, even the rich have enough things and stop buying. At that point, the natural place to put one's money is in the bank where it earns nominal interest or in some investment scheme.

So, while my rich friends in OC may be able to buy a new car every year or two, I have two cars in the driveway which are 10 and 15 years old. Sure, they're paid off, but I'm paying plenty in repairs to keep them running. I really need to replace both cars, but I can't even afford to consider replacing one of them. In the meanwhile, the Mercedes dealer in my town is having his third banner year in a row. Who is buying those cars? Not me, and not the other middle class families around here.

Which is why it makes sense to continue middle-class tax cuts while dropping those that benefit the wealthy. Those wealthy may not create any more jobs than they didn't in the past 10 years once their tax breaks are gone, but at least the money will be sitting in the government coffers where it can be redistributed to help millions of Americans, rather than sitting in a bank account earning interest for the privileged few.

21. I need a new car too. Was actually thinking about getting one too
That was until I got my property tax bill this year with a more than a $1200 increase. More than a hundred dollar increase on my monthly mortgage payment. That ruled out any new car for a while. Maybe never?

22. I am not at all sure of the numbers you quote - and maybe it is
True for certain places. But among my friends, who are mostly in their late fifties, the unemployment rate is probably thirty percent.

And no one will hire us as the insurance premiums are so high for our age group, and the new HCR means employers are mandated to make the insurance premium payments for all hires.

But I did think your other comments were spot on.

23. The official rate is 9.8% and the rate when one includes underemployed
and those who have stopped looking is 18%.

Yes, the rate is higher in different age groups.
