Tweety's reporting it as a fact that we'll be cutting SS
Just as if it's a forgone conclusion that Obama will be supporting that. I guess we're the only ones holding out any slim hope that he will fight cuts to SS.

2. Didn't you notice the guys he chose to head up his commission???
Edited on Mon Dec-06-10 07:29 PM by polichick
That was the biggest red flag ever - he won't fight SS cuts.

7. Yep. And extending the tax cuts for the rich to blow the deficit up some more with money that...
stimulate any economic growth.

9. I have moments. I know it's not true but I still have moments.
I guess my real hope is there are enough Democrats left in the Senate who will fight it or that public disapproval will be strong enough.

15. well, I guess I have hope too, LL -- that the House will stand firm, for example
... and send it to reconciliation.

But hope from the "Hope and Change" folks? How sad that that went by the wayside, long ago...

19. It is sad and I think the possibility of reconciliation for the FY 2012 budget is not allowed.
I don't remember the details but some procedural thing they did with FY 2011 meant reconciliation can't be used for the next one.

12. Well, I think that's probably true but I keep wishing.
I'm like that little kid in Miracle on 34th Street sitting in the corner saying, "I believe, I believe. It's silly but I believe."

The difference is in that movie there really was a Santa Claus. I think in this one the Grinch (Simpson) wins.

I know the lyrics don't quite match but this is all I feel right now. Somewhere down inside, I was still harboring a little flicker of hope. It's totally gone now.

 I need to take a break tonight.

21. Yes. I understand the need for a break.
The hits have been coming fast and furious. Get some rest. I think we're going down but we can gear up and, at least, go down fighting.

This pain was very unexpected because I thought I'd prepared myself, expecting the worse. Goodnight LL

8. Tweety can be a fucking moron sometimes.
One would have to be to believe that Social Security cuts would actually happen.

10. Tweety just told Keith Ellison: "I'm right and you're wrong ...
so let's just move on." It was possibly the rudest, most self-deluded thing I've ever heard a host say on one of these shows. Say, "Well, I disagree" -- but if you are going to tell the guest they're wrong and you're right, then don't bother to ask the question.

That man doesn't know what he's talking about half the time, and he truly seems about to veer off the edge of sanity sometimes.

18. Well, he was. He was only saying that because Keith Ellison said there was no such thing as a safe
seat in Congress. And that is ludicrous. Someone who wins with 80% of the vote each time because 80% of your district is Democratic is not about to lose.

25. You're wrong, I'm right (I say, sarcastically)
Edited on Mon Dec-06-10 08:19 PM by frazzled
Tell that to William Jefferson. You get caught with money in the fridge, your seat is not safe. I realize that is a "unique" case. But honestly, the point Ellison was trying to make involved someone like Jim Oberstar, a 35-year member of Congress who lost to the Republican this time: he'd been winning his elections in the mid to high 60% range, and sometimes in the 73-75%, for the last three and a half decades.

I feel like my Congressman, Danny Davis, has a seat for life--but it's only because no one serious has ever challenged him. If he got a strong primary opponent, his seat (which he wins probably in the 80% range) could be challenged from the inside. It will always be a Democratic district -- until it gets redistricted.

ON EDIT: This all was not the point, however. It was the crazed way he said it, with venom and hostility. Just say, "Now, I disagree with you on that, but let's get to another topic." You're wrong, I'm right is just unacceptable under any circumstances.

in his actions.

16. I don't doubt it. I think I just cling to some denial because it's so frightening I can't really...
face it. It's really the last chance we had for any hope of survival.

20. I don't think he said that...
he said that Obama will be talking about some serious things, such as Social Security, that may need to be cut, and point out that the argument he may make for this will make it much more difficult for the Repubs to insist on tax cuts for the rich while SS is on the table.

23. Well, I would like to believe that. But Tweety said, "SS that will need to be cut."
Obviously, Tweety's not the last word but I'm not hearing anything out of the President saying he's against the cuts. And I have heard him tell Democrats they needed to support the work of the commission.
