Isn't this the type of choice the Republicans ALWAYS want to force on us? |
|
It was, or should have been, a false choice, but it came down to "Do you want unemployment comp with tax breaks for millionaires that we truly can't afford" OR "Do you want NO unemployment comp plus raise everyone's taxes?"
It sure feels a lot like "Do you want $9.00 and hour with no benefits and no union or would you rather have a union and we'll just move the factory to a "right to work" state?"
It feels a lot like "Do you want no law at all to insure your Constitutional rights are protected OR would you prefer a statute that specifically protects your rights but which will never be enforced?" As long as they are allowed to frame the questions, none of the answers will matter. And, as long as they can count on us to grit our teeth, cuss, and then grudgingly accept their "best short-term option", they will, of course, keep offering these "choices".
Unions were formed in part because of wise negotiators and progressive politicians, but also, in part, by guys with scarred knuckles wielding pick handles.
Rights are not freely given by those in power. They are taken by people not afraid to use power.
Democrats can't continue to survive by playing it safe and "playing the game". Our party exists to speak for the disadvantaged, the weak, the poor, the different. We must do that or it all comes apart.
And, sometimes it has to get messy.
