Modesto woman dies trying to rescue dog from fire
Modestan, 85, ran into blazing home

An 85-year-old Modesto woman was killed early Monday after she re-entered a burning house to try to save her dog.

Two adults and three children managed to escape the blaze, which destroyed the west Modesto home.

Fire officials said that the tragedy could have been averted.

"Once you're out (of a fire), you stay out, even for your favorite pet or toy," said Modesto fire Battalion Chief Hugo Patino. "Conditions change rapidly in a structure fire. The smoke is so toxic, with all the synthetics we have in our homes, that a couple of whiffs will put you down, and then not much more and you're dead.

"I know our pets and loved ones are dear to us, but you just can't go back in."

2. What a courageous woman
I would have done the same thing. My dachshunds are my kids. They would have come out with me if my house was on fire.

4. a dog, cat, bird, fish or other favorite pet is not a toy
Do they recommend that you stay out while your child dies?

I'm absolutely terrified of fires and burning. I only hope in such a situation I would have the courage to find my animals and get them out.

Godspeed and RIP to the woman and her dog.

5. Having never been in that situation, I can't say for sure that I would risk my life for a pet.
However, I can understand those people who would. I'd like to think that I wouldn't hesitate to risk myself in order to save another person, especially a child.
