As far as I can surmise, Obama and his advisors are trying to blackmail his base by kicking the can into what would be his second term. The Republicans are playing chicken with him, but he's playing chicken with his base.

The variable that he left out of this equation, however, was a potential primary challenge. Seemed absurd at the end of 2009. Not so much at the end of 2010.
