Elizabeth Edwards's post on DU- I saved it-inspiring |
|
Edited on Tue Dec-07-10 06:19 PM by wilt the stilt
Since I cannot start a thread (which I think is a good rule by the way), I have to hijack one -- at least briefly. I do want this thread to continue on, though, because the topic is so important. (Moderators can feel free to move this, of course.)
But I also had something I wanted to say to all of you. You know that I read DU and have for quite some time, long before any of you knew my name. I really appreciate the support you have given me on this latest hurdle and before. It means a lot to me and to John.
Now that I have more time, I will post some, too. But today I want to share something inspiring, part of a letter from Thomas Jefferson. This is from the new Bernstein biography of Jefferson. Jefferson sent the letter in 1798 after the passage of the Sedition Act:
"A little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true sight, restore their government to its true principles. It is true that in the meantime we are suffering deeply in spirit, and incurring the horrors of a war and long oppressions of enormous public debt. If the game runs sometimes against us at home we must have patience till luck turns, and then we shall have an opportunity of winning back the principles we have lost, for this is a game where principles are at stake."

7. Loss of Elizabeth is such a blow |
|
One of our great lights has gone out and there is nothing to do about it but mourn the loss.
That quote of Jefferon's helped sustain me through the Bush years. Sad to say, I find myself in need of it again.

10. I remember her posting here and on Daily Kos. |
|
I remember asking her a question. It was during the campaign. There were hundreds of questions so I didn't expect her to get to mine. But she did.
I asked her if her husband had given any thought to who his VP might be and if so, could she talk about it?
She very graciously took the time to answer. She said that yes, her husband was considering a number of people at that time but had not settled on anyone in particular. But, she said, she wanted us to know that whoever was chosen, it would be someone whose views were in line with her husband's so that if anything happened to him, we could be assured that the goals would not change.
R.I.P. to someone who felt like a friend during the awful Bush years and who I greatly admired then and still do.

16. K&R! Thank you so much for posting this... |

I remember reading this, and feeling honored that she took the time to share with us at such a difficult time in her life. She was such an extraordinary, courageous and lovely person, and this post certainly expresses all that, and her kindness... ;( O8)
