Over 100 House Dems oppose tax cut deal, changes now likely
by Chris Bowers
Tue Dec 07, 2010 at 03:16:51 PM PST

<snip>

Opposition to the deal continues to pile up among Congressional Democrats. In the House, reports put Democratic opposition in the triple digits:

@GregMitch Greg Mitchell

Chuck Todd: Pelosi does not have votes in House right now for the deal--"triple digit" opposition

The situation isn’t much better for the deal in the Senate, where two more Democrats, Tom Harkin and Patrick Leahy, have announced their opposition to the deal in its current form. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has already said that he doesn’t think the votes are there in the Senate, unless the deal is changed.

2. Then I guess we'll just get a Bush-tax-cut only bill in January, when Democrats are in the minority.
Edited on Tue Dec-07-10 06:44 PM by BzaDem
Not sure what their goal is here. They don't actually have the power to get what they want -- they just have the power to make it even FURTHER from what they want.

16. They Have The Power To Dump This In The Republican's Laps, And Make It All Their Fault...
if nothing gets done.

We call their bluff, and then go on TV and beat them over the head with it EVERY DAY until they cry uncle!

24. Millions Are Paying Now, And Millions More Will Be Paying Either Way In The Future...
If, as Bernanke said the other night on 60 Minutes, we won't get back to "normal" unemployment levels for the next 4 or 5 years...

Make the Republicans do the right thing for their country and their fellow citizens for once in their miserable goddamned lives.

WE are the good guys... WE WANT to take care of the middle-class and the unemployed...

THE REPUBLICANS ARE THE ONES BLOCKING OUR ABILITY TO DO THAT!!!

See how the 2012 election looks for them after THAT reality sinks into the populace.

Edited on Tue Dec-07-10 06:53 PM by Hippo_Tron
If his caucus all votes for this along with many blue dogs then you can have 200 Dems opposing and it still will pass.

18. I assume you mean "will pass"
On the other hand, doesn't the Speaker pretty much control the House calendar? Short of a discharge petition, if Pelosi doesn't want it voted on, it won't be voted on.

19. True, but Pelosi isn't saying she's opposed as I understand
She's saying she can't deliver 218 votes from her caucus.

15. I'm kind of confused, though...
You can't strike a meaningful deal without having the congressional Democrats aboard. Did Obama think he had authority to negotiate on their behalf (and if so, was he right?), or did he simply assume they would follow along?

25. Even Mary Landrieu has doubts about supporting this bill.
Listening from some of the comments by House Dems, there really appears to be a revolt going on and I think Nancy should just get out of the way and let the pissed off members give the President a piece of their mind.

Even Reid doesn't seem enthused to even bother to try to drum up the votes for this measure.

This is what happens when the Democratic President hammers out a deal with Republicans and doesn't bother to work with the Congressional members of his own party.

He's my senator and I will tell him to stick to his guns. No more rubber stamps for BHO!
