Obama Calling Senators On DADT Repeal Vote Set for Tonight
YOU SHOULD BE CALLING TOO! CALL THEM NOW, TELL THEM TO REPEAL: (202) 224-3121

http://joemygod.blogspot.com/2010/12/obama-calls-senators-on-dadt.html

Metro Weekly's Chris Geidner reports that President Obama today contacted members of the Senate asking for their support of the Defense Authorization Act, which includes the repeal of DADT.

White House spokesman Shin Inouye tells Metro Weekly, "The President has been reaching out to Senators from both sides of the aisle to reiterate his desire to see Congress pass the National Defense Authorization Act, including a repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell', during the lame duck."

This morning Sen. Harry Reid indicated that he may bring the cloture vote on the bill to the floor this evening.

Aubrey Sarvis, the executive director of Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, said in a statement this morning, "Reid is actively reaching out to his Republican colleagues to reach an agreement on how to proceed. We also know from Hill sources the President is actively working today's vote with key Republican senators. Today the Senate has an opportunity to make the nation's defense funding and our service members a higher priority than tax cuts for millionaires."

13. Nah.
It's apparently more fun to preemptively insult other DUers in what was otherwise a positive and informative thread.

Or something.

15. Heads He Loses, Tails He Loses
There's a very strong chance this vote could fail and it will be Obama's fault. Doesn't matter if he stands in the well of the Senate and holds his breath, he didn't do enough or he's really not supportive. Pay no attention to the right wingers who have long used this issue as a stalking horse and don't want to see one of their favorites go away. Somehow this President didn't move far enough fast enough.

While I hope this vote passes and DADT is finally scrapped (DOMA is next), I'm also somewhat amazed at the progress this issue has made in the past couple years...the change in attitudes and public opinion that is the driving force now behind repeal. IMO it's not a question of if but when this discriminating law will be repealed.

19. Very True...
I have been very critical of the way this administration has dealt with Congress and now is trying to think that if he pisses off the left and the right he must be doing things right. Just lets him get rolled again and again. But those who feel he's a latent homophobe or doesn't care about DADT are off base on this one.

Cheers...

7. We should have 59 Dems plus 3 republicans (at least)
Edited on Wed Dec-08-10 02:52 PM by Renew Deal
Snowe, Lugar and Murkowski are the 3 IIRC. But Snowe might be part of that "letter" wanting to hold things up and she might be part of the "2 weeks debate" BS.

11. We only have 58 Dems in the Senate currently.
Edited on Wed Dec-08-10 02:44 PM by racaulk
Kirk (R) replaced Burris (D) in Illinois as a result of the last election. Kirk has already been seated.

Also, I think Collins and Brown may be on board from the R side. We'll see what happens.

:hi:

Edited for clarity.

Considering how close it appears that this vote is going to be, I sure wish we still had Burris' vote in our column.

12. Ain't going to happen, I'd love to be proven wrong, but it ain't going to happen
'Pugs are going to object to the Defense budget "being held hostage" and demand that DADT repeal be taken out and considered separately. And of course Obama will comply and it will be too late.

26. Hello, Jim Inhofe's office? Yeah, I want you to convince the senator...
To reverse years and years of always voting the insane branch of Christianity line and support the repeal of DADT. Can you do that? No, huh? Well, I bet Tom Coburn will be open to doing so.

36. good
it would be nice if somebody pushing for this would point out that there are gay men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan and that if they are doing so honorably, it would be a dishonor to our country to send them home as well as a disservice to those already there to lose capable colleagues in the effort.
