I think John McCain has ruined his "legacy" with his behavior regarding DADT.
Edited on Wed Dec-08-10 02:47 PM by Renew Deal
I want to say this before votes go down. McCain has done many things to ruin his reputation. I think the single biggest one, more than even nominating Palin or hugging Bush is his dishonest opposition to DADT.

He said he would support repeal if the military supported it. The military came through. He didn't.
He said he'd support repeal after a study. Study is over and he still doesn't support it.
He has made dishonest arguments regarding repeal and ignored facts, advice, and information from the military.
He's put on a show about being interested in vets, but has ignored the civil rights of soldiers.
He has also taken a position contrary to simple human rights.

John McCain has been dishonest in his opposition to DADT and I truly believe that it will tarnish his reputation and legacy more than anything else he's done.

3. It sure doesn't help him
but he ruined it by giving a national stage to caribou barbie and her family of crazies. I'll never forgive the prick for inflicting those damned Wassilabillies on us. Now I can't escape them.

The fact that he's continually moving the goal posts on his support for a repeal of DADT does nothing but show me that he just doesn't give a shit anymore about any form of legacy.

7. My theory is that he did some "experimenting" while in the service.
And he's still ashamed about it today.

Get over it Abe Simpson.

10. But why put on the show?
That's what I don't get. I think he never meant what he promised years ago.

8. The Anit-Goldwater...
McCain likes to say his political mentor and role model was Barry Goldwater who in his later years became supportive of many gay rights issue and I'm sure if he were still alive today would vote to repeal DADT. This is all about the ego of a bitter old man who seems to relish pissing people off these days.

12. I'll never forget an interview he did just after a Bush SOTU in which Bush used some McCain talking
points; he was delirious with pride, clearly drunk, keeping it nicely together for the camera, but the CONTEMPT was absolutely loud and CLEAR in everything about his facial body-language, tone, and demeanor. I'm old, so I give people the benefit of the doubt, but there was NO doubt about what I was reading on that man's face and in his voice. If I were around such a person in my life, I would have absolutely NOTHING to do with him.

13. His legacy is that he killed part of our country
by introducing us to Sarah "You Betcha" Palin. That is a crime for which there is no words.

14. As a constituent, I can say he's been dishonest about many issues.
Among hi most galling, IMHO, was stem-cell research funding. My talk on the phone with the nice staffer was quite sharply contrasted with his pitiful response letter as to why he didn't support it in the end.

22. He could have had a good legacy AND after he passes on it will be good for a while
Because the conserva-bots will praise him endlessly, focusing mainly on his military career, but as the Daily Show pointed out, we are moving, inexorably, towards gays serving openly in the military - it WILL happen. And after X number of years, when the majority of people don't consider it a big deal, there will be documentaries about the fight, and every documentary about civil rights needs a bad guy (like Wallace and integration), and he'll be it. And to make him look worse, the documentary will highlight and amplify everything remotely negative about him - stuff that we talked about on DU that were (rightly) glossed over by the Obama campaign like his cheating on his first wife, etc.

That will be highlighted, and his marriage to Cindy will be spun as a way for him to become wealthy enough to constantly run for office. Sarah Palin will hopefully have disappeared from the national stage by then and will openly be considered a laughingstock - even by the RW media who worship her now, and her political career will be blamed on him. Keating 5 stuff, long considered ancient history, will be brought up, and even his time in the military will be disparaged. All this stuff and much more will be part of the documentary as they show him becoming more demented and angrier as the last years of his Senate career/life are played out.

And he deserves it.
