"Obama ceded the entire debate over tax policy and economics to the Republicans and their policies"

Obama's Capitulation on Taxes
By Ruth Conniff
Political Editor of The Progressive
December 7, 2010

Rather than take a stand against a program of massive transfer of wealth to the rich and painful cuts for the poor and middle class, Obama ceded the entire debate over tax policy and economics--a debate he was winning with the public without even trying--to the Republicans and their policies of shameless greed.

If Obama won't stand up to the Republicans now, with the economy in shambles, the public on his side, and his party in control of Congress for another month--how can we expect better leadership come January?

Obama acknowledged that the tax compromise was a defeat. But he put off until another day a new battle to let the most outrageous tax cuts for the rich expire. "I'm confident," he said, "that as we make tough choices about bringing our deficit down . . . it will become apparent that we cannot afford to extend those tax cuts any longer."

The shape of our country is going through a radical transformation, thanks to rightwing tax policy that starves public works and programs that benefit the majority of the people.

Capitulation on the Bush tax cuts doesn't just drive up the deficit. It doesn't just give a lot of money to the people who need it the least. It fundamentally reshapes our society, eliminating the pathways to a decent life for people who are not lucky enough to be taking home those record bonuses and inheriting millions tax-free.

5. No, it will be worse...... far worse
Now that the stage is set with the GOP controlling the House, and Obama catering (cratering?) to their ideals, next year will be the year of non stop deficit scare tactics.

The DC insiders, which Obama IS a member of, have plans to pay for most of the tax cuts Obama just agreed to by imposing a form of austerity programs on us that reduces or eliminates most of the programs that aid the poor, the disabled, and the elderly.

They will be pushing hard to scare people about the debts of the country as a means of gaining public support for the screw job thats coming.

2. "Tax cuts and small government are as American as apple pie" -Obama
He will oversee the destruction of FDR's New Deal, privatize everything, give away the commons to the corporations, and get called a socialist by the R's for doing so.

What a fucking nightmare this guy is.

8. He has destroyed the Democratic Party and everything it stands for.
And for that, he's worse than a Republican.

11. Yes, he will destroy the very fabric of the Democratic Party.
The values we hold common will be liquidated and its parts sold off.

6. His actions are really disappointing
Unfortunately, our country is facing a day of reckoning with the debt, and while I do not want my taxes to go up, every citizen in this country must realize that "cutting taxes" is not the way you climb out of debt. Further, if the Republicans are truly interested in cutting spending, I anxiously await their actions to: i) end the 2 wars; and ii) slash the remainder of the military/defense budget in half.
