Obama: Liberals don't feel 'betrayed'

President Obama is denying that liberals in his party, who are upset over the deal to give tax cuts to the rich, are turning on him.

"It is inaccurate to characterize Democrats writ large as feeling, quote-unquote, betrayed," Obama told reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday. "I think the more they look at it, the more of them are going to say, 'This makes sense.' "

Obama, speaking after meeting with Poland's president, also expressed confidence that Congress would pass the package with the tax cuts and the START deal with Russia. He said he has spoken with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell about the arms treaty and that it would be taken up in the current session of Congress.

He didn't answer questions about repealing "don't ask, don't tell."

Lots of times DU goes ballistic over a POLITICO story that turns out to be inaccurate.

Maybe somebody else will do a story with full quotes.

From your own OP

"It is inaccurate to characterize Democrats writ large as feeling, quote-unquote, betrayed," Obama told reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday. "I think the more they look at it, the more of them are going to say, 'This makes sense.' "

You chose to perpetuate the dishonesty of politico, or did you not read your own quote?

16. Does he ever speak to Democrats? Apparently many Democrats
didn't know about this tax cut deal, but he speaks all the time to Boner (yes, I know, spelling mistake deliberate) and to other Republicans, like Lindsey Graham and Judd Gregg two of his BFF.

As far as who he is calling 'liberals', it seems it is now fashionable for the rightwing of the Democratic Party to call themselves 'liberals'.

How about we just dispense with labels and say that many people who voted for him, have been disappointed over and over again by his apparent caving (although more and more I do not think he is caving) to Republicans and his unwillingness to fight for the people who elected him.

DLC now = Liberal I have been told. As Shakespeare said 'what's in a name, a rose by any other name would smell as sweet :eyes:

Betrayed? No, I don't feel betrayed. I feel as if he has spat in the face of all the poor, unemployed, working poor, and former middle class members. That's how I feel. I feel despised.

His arrogance is getting on my last nerve.

Many, many well known economists are saying he is going to bring this country down with these policies helping the wealthiest of all. They don't need help.

I'm living in Dumfukistan. Up is down. War is Peace. Rich is poor.

44. Or POLITICO is making up silly divisive shit again
The other two sources I found quote Obama accurately, and the word "Liberal" is nowhere to be found

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/theoval/post/2010/12/obama-congress-should-approve-tax-deal-start/1

Obama rejected a reporter's suggestion that Democrats feel "betrayed" by the two-year extension of tax cuts for individuals who make more than $200,000 a year, and couples who make more than $250,000. "I think it is inaccurate to characterize Democrats, writ large, as quote-unquote betrayed," Obama said.

33. Classic shoddy Politico reporting
Edited on Wed Dec-08-10 04:23 PM by RufusTFirefly
Where other than in the headline does it say "liberals"?

The original question was from Bill Plante, and you'll note that neither Plante nor the President uses the word "liberals."

Q Mr. President, now that you’ve negotiated with the Republicans, are you willing to negotiate with the Democrats who think they’ve -- that you’ve betrayed them on the tax package?
And when you talked to the Republicans, did they give you any assurances that they would take up START and “don’t ask” in the lame duck?

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Well, first of all, Bill, I think it is inaccurate to characterize Democrats writ large as feeling “betrayed.” I think Democrats are looking at this bill, and you’ve already had a whole bunch of them who said this makes sense. And I think the more they look at it, the more of them are going to say this makes sense.

I'm a liberal, and I feel betrayed. But the President never addressed that issue. Politico just made it up.

I have a simple request, why dont you name one? Who are these actual "liberals" who dont feel betrayed by this? I literally have not spoken to one democrat who thinks this is anything other than pathetic. I dont like to pretend like the people I know are representative of the liberal community at large but every single democrat I know is furious about this and many of them call themselves moderates and are usually hesitant to criticize Obama about anything. All I can say is that if the moderates I know are pissed, he has a real fucking problem on his hands.

Also, is this not the most pathetic attempt to write-off legitimate criticism ever?
