In An Ideal Libertarian World, A Market Would Never Even Exist |
|
Let's say that the U.S. govt threw in the towel and completely dimantled itself. No FDA. No EPA. No IRS. No Justice Dept. No SEC. No nothing. The govt. is only going to do defense and nothing else. The Libertarian ideal.
Without any govt intereference, what's to stop Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Jaimie Dimon, Blankfield, Verizon, the Koch brothers, Archer Daniels Midland, Monsanto, Apple, Citibank, Masterard, and every other public and privately traded business to come together and form one huge mega-corporation called, Mega Corp, that would own and run everything.
So, if you wanted to start a business, you would have to go to Mega Corp to get approval for your business or your loan. Mega Corp would control whatever resources you need. You would have to give Mega Corp controlling interest in your buiness if it is successful.
IOW, the powerful in our economy would congeal their power into a few mega large corps or one giant one, thereby obviating the need for any type of market place. The biggest fault of Libertarianism is that it ignores the huge power imbalances which left unchecked by a force that could equal its power (read Government) then we would not have a market place. We would have tyranny of the powerful.

I just don't like statism/corporatism. We need more power given back to the individual.

Realistically, we have gone way too far to the authoritarian side on the authoritarian/libertarian scale. We need a bit more liberty, a lot more actually. The best place is somewhere in between IMO.

20. You are getting confused over the words "libertarian" and "Libertarian" |
|
Edited on Wed Dec-08-10 06:55 PM by tjwash
The word "libertarian" without capitalization, is actually associated with the Eighteenth Century libertine philosophy or if applied to present times, with civil libertarians, such as those associated with the ACLU.
Once you capitalize it, though, it refers to the "Libertarian Party" and becomes an entirely different animal. They're philosophy is pretty simple matter...basically it’s about caring for nothing at all whatsoever, about anything but your money, your guns, and your absolute inborn right to your money and your guns. They have not one lick of concern about society or anyone in it, proved conclusively by their incessant screaming not about fewer taxes but no taxes, not about decriminalization of some drugs but legalization of all drugs, and not about less gun control, but no gun control.
Take your standard Right-wing lunatic, remove the issues of sex and religion, add a double dose of selfish callous disregard, stir in a gun waving madness putting even the NRA to shame, mix in a seething hatred of the Federal government (Timothy McVeigh was a loud and proud member of the Libertarian party), toss in a few containers of legalized crack and crank and you got your basic run of the mill Libertarian.

2. "Tyranny of the powerful" is exactly what many libertarians want. |

Many of them vote republican because they suffer from the delusion that they are, or will be, part of the powerful and not on the other end of the equation.

8. Anarchy, as an ethos, has much more value than Libertarianism |
|
Anarchism goes way beyond pure primitivism, or Mad Max....
But Libertarianism is all about using the great things government has given us, but without a government....and you can see where that will lead.

but there would be a cutthroat battle of takeovers, and maybe even actual violence, as corporations clawed their way above each other. It would be based on takeovers, not some sort of mutual understanding.

not socialism per se, yes, but free market capitalism (as in, gilded age capitalism) has never been about cooperation. It's about making as much money for yourself as possible. It's not that they have some hatred for the lower classes, and love the upper classes. It's just easier to stomp on poor people, as long as their making money. If it's profitable, they'll stomp on other rich people just as quickly

17. That may be true of a libertarian. However, there are some anti-trust conservatives that essentially |

believe the two legitimate purposes of government are defense and anti-trust.
