wall mart simply does not give up
locally we have had a fight now going on for a few years to keep their super center out. So they took it to council, and council voted against them... they got the Mayor on their side, but Council overrode his veto. Now they have a petition ongoing.

I just had a "discussion" with a signature gatherer... and explained to him and a few of the people he was going to snooker, as to why we need to keep them OUT... it comes down to this... GOOD PAYING JOBS. I also told this guy, that I understand he gets paid by the signature but I WILL actively convince those that might sign his petition NOT TO give him the time of day.

When all other fails, convince the people to give them their poison pill for cheaper groceries.

I hate Wallmart...

3. My friends call it Stasi-Mart here, now. Pushing government propaganda products!
Keep resisting in effective and creative ways. At least it provides a voice for contrast and flexible behavior that inspires.

4. We fought them here for about 3 years..they built the super center anyway
but without the grocery stuff in place.. It was just big empty space in the store that they filled up temporarily....until they finally got their way..:(

5. When they build new centers they close the other ones up and leave them vacant
so that other competitors cannot move in. They also make the taxpayers pay for their sewer, road construction etc... over several years out of your taxes.

7. Yep, my sister went through the same thing
At least twice in her neighborhood and she's expecting them to try again.

One of the 'odd' things that happened while she was fighting WalMart was that every home in her small neighborhood was re-appraised by the county and their value increased several times. That meant the property taxes went up four to five times the previous amount. Local property sales for single family residential property did not indicate an increase in property value for their homes - only commercial property had.

My sister convinced her neighbors to work with her to fight the appraisal increases and the entire neighborhood won. This is a neighborhood of about 30-40 homes mostly owned by retirees and working people. None of them could have kept their homes with that kind of property tax increase. They would have been forced to sell.

One guess as to who would have been waiting for a chance to buy?

My SERIOUS concern here though (as of late) regarding Walmart ads being aired along side PBS Tavis Smiley and (gasp!) The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and/or Cobert!!! Oi Vey!

Now THAT'S some serious stuff!!!!!

12. Even some people on DU will whine about how poor people "have no other choice,"
The concept of hidden costs is lost on many.
