I'll never forget the time I had that conversation with my best friend Stephen, who was gay. We were both in our early 20's and I asked him the stupid question that all of us straights end up asking, "When did you know you were gay?" He laughed, Stephen had a big, giant honk of a laugh that could be heard by certain mammals miles away, and he said to me, "When the doctor slapped my ass on the day I was born." Of course he turned the question around on me and asked me when I knew I was straight.

I learned a lot from Stephen, he was my best friend and he died of aids in 89, like so many other good friends from that time.
