He kept refusing to fight back against those French who attacked him. Interestingly, one of the "rabble's" nicknames for Marie was Madame Deficit. Her nickname, “Madame Deficit”, described Marie’s spending habits quite well. She spent enormous amounts of money on clothing, jewels, chateaux, and any kind of whim. At certain times, she would help the poor with huge amounts of money, but only sporadically, according to impulse.

make quiet concessions that would make life easier on the poor. He refused them all, because he saw such concessions as beneath him and something that would undercut his power. Similar circumstances convinced one of our presidents to change tacks and institute the New Deal. Give some ground and save the status quo, or refuse and possibly lose it all.
