Westboro Church: "God hates Elizabeth Edwards" -- will picket funeral
http://www.usatoday.com/news/religion/2010-12-09-edwards-westboro-baptist-protest-funeral_N.htm

Westboro Baptist Church, known for its protests at soldiers' funerals, plans to protest for 90 minutes until the service begins. The protests typically speak out against homosexuality. Westboro's announcement of the picket also claims that God hates Edwards and that she is dead because she thought she could control God.

The Edwards family is asking that people make donations to the Wade Edwards Foundation, created in honor of Edwards' son who died in a car crash at age 16.

I guess they're all going to live forever, like the vampires they are. (Not that I'd want to disparage vampires by comparing them to Westboro people.)

4. Here is a fun Gandhi quote for you...
"It is better to be violent, if there is violence in our hearts, than to put on the cloak of nonviolence to cover impotence."

2. For folks so unfamiliar with so much of what God allegedly said
They seem awfully sure about what God likes and doesn't like, but without good cause. I should say that the most expedient countermeasure would be to regard them as raving lunatics who don't know what they're talking about, and as such, ignore them. The truth is not in them, and by the very terms of the Bible they're so accustomed to abusing, they are liars.

5. I think these people are closer to the ideals of the god in the Christian Holy Bible than many would
care to admit.

8. Do you want to trade Bible quotes?
Lev. 20:13, "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their blood guiltness is upon them"

OK. Your turn.

11. Acts 8
It might mean more to you if you read it yourself, though.

But then, you might also need some grounding in Jewish tradition and rituals as well as the laws surrounding the Temple and its environs, and I'm not sure I have that kind of time. But your concern is duly noted. Thanks.

12. I thank you for noting my concern, I note yours well, but let's exchange some Bible Quotes!
Numbers 31

7 And they warred against the Midianites, as the LORD commanded Moses; and they slew all the males.
8 And they slew the kings of Midian, beside the rest of them that were slain; namely, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian: Balaam also the son of Beor they slew with the sword.
9 And the children of Israel took all the women of Midian captives, and their little ones, and took the spoil of all their cattle, and all their flocks, and all their goods.
10 And they burnt all their cities wherein they dwelt, and all their goodly castles, with fire.
11 And they took all the spoil, and all the prey, both of men and of beasts.
12 And they brought the captives, and the prey, and the spoil, unto Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and unto the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by Jordan near Jericho.
13 And Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the congregation, went forth to meet them without the camp.
14 And Moses was wroth with the officers of the host, with the captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, which came from the battle.
15 And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive?
16 Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the LORD.
17 Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.
18 But all the women children, that have not KNOWN A MAN by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.

MineralMan showed me this one about two weeks ago. It's pretty interesting, don't you think? "Keep them alive for yourselves." Classic Bible.

28. Let's face it, the Bible is a schizophrenic mish-mash of nutty stories
reflecting the many varied mindstates of its contributors.

So, yes, there is stuff about love and forgiveness and there is sick, twisted stuff and an angry, vengeful sky spook who routinely opens cans of whoop ass on humans.

Anyone who takes this stuff seriously does at his or her own peril.

13. From the classic "Letter to Dr. Laura" e-mail:
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to follow them.

1. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odour for the Lord (Lev. 1:9). The problem is my neighbours. They claim the odour is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev.15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell ? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

4. Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighbouring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

5. I have a neighbour who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev. 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?

7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some room for negotiation here?

8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die?

9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if wear gloves?

10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? (Lev.24:10-16) Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

22. Just an observation from an agnostic...
I was raised mainstream Christian Protestant--very bland Midwestern variety--non-fundamentalist variety. I can never remember anything but the New Testament being presented in church sermons. Ever.

Yet, the RW fundies seem to ignore the New Testament, which ironically purports to be the word and actual tenets of Christ, in favor of the old testament that supports their various forms of bigotry. Likewise those who would paint all Christians the same as these RWer fundies do so as well.

I'm agnostic, non-religious and don't have a major "dog in this fight." But, I do think it disingenuous that some (on both sides) chose to ignore the part of the bible that purportedly represents Christianity when arguing for or against it.

Just my observation and my first and last post on the issue.

23. I was raised Roman Catholic, which is why I pick on that organization the most.
I went to a Catholic school when I was little, I went to a Catholic church every Sunday, and I also had to go to Sunday school every Sunday. I got a lot of OT training, especially in Sunday school.

President Obama says he does not think gay people deserve the same rights as straight people because of his Christian faith. His point of view seems to match the majority of Christians here in the US. Wouldn't you agree?

"I'm agnostic, non-religious" equals atheist. Most atheists, and many theists, admit they could be wrong. Welcome to the club. :toast:

25. I think ...
that Obama's saying this re: gay marriage reflects his confusion of Christian traditions versus Christian faith. Given that there is nothing in the New testament (to my knowledge) that would justify that belief, it underscores the recent poll that shows Christians to be nearly totally unschooled in what is actually in the bible. In that, he is not that very different from the fundies that are picking and choosing verses from the Old testament to justify their bigotry that they purport to be based on Christianity. Of course there is also the issue of pandering to the fundy "religious" community as well.

But I have a lot of affection and respect for those people that I grew up around that lived a life consistent with Christian philosophy and who were open to that which they were not accustomed, including homosexuality or transgender issues, different cultures or races. They were (and are) VERY different from the loud voices of purported Christianity that we see on the RW. It pains me to see them lumped together.

30. I completely agree there are good Christians; some are significantly better than myself.
But the Holy Bible still says some really fucked up shit, and Westboro Church's interpretations are by no means a stretch.

24. Odd you should use the word vampires
The infamous Obama surrogate Donnie McClurkin, speaking as he does for the more mainstream elements of Christianity, often calls GLBT people vampires. There is not a plug's difference between him and the Phelps crew.
