Interview with Geoffrey Perret, author of "Commander in Chief: How Truman, Johnson, and Bush Turned a Presidential Power into a Threat to America's Future"

Presidential and military historian Geoffrey Perret looks at the expansion of the executive privilege incurred in the presidencies of Harry Truman, Lyndon Johnson, and George W. Bush. Mr. Perret contends that each President misread the need to have a strong executive branch and this folly lead to what the author deems were unwinnable wars in Korea, Vietnam, and Iraq. Furthermore, Mr. Perret argues that the expansion of executive privilege destroys the U.S. government's system of checks and balances and becomes a threat to the Constitution.

Geoffrey Perret is the author of several books of history including "Lincoln's War: The Untold Story of America's Greatest President as Commander in Chief" and "Old Soldiers Never Die: The Life of Douglas MacArthur."

Watch now - http://www.booktv.org/ram/history/0507/btv052007_1.ram

Historian Heather Ewing recounts the life of James Smithson, the benefactor of the Smithsonian Institution. Mr. Smithson was the illegitimate son of the Duke of Northumberland and made his name in the field of science. Upon his death in 1829 he left his fortune to create "an establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge among men" in Washington, D.C. He left no further instructions and to this day it is not known why he made this request as he had never set foot in the United States. The Smithsonian Institution was founded in 1846 after great debate in Congress as to how to use Smithson's gift.

Heather Ewing is an architectural historian that has worked for the Smithsonian Institution and the Ringling Museum of Art.

I've Got A Home In Glory Land: A Lost Tale of The Underground Railroad
Karolyn Smardz Frost

Archeologist and historian Karolyn Smardz Frost unearths the story of Thornton and Lucie Blackburn, a married couple who escaped slaveholding Kentucky destined for Canada in 1831. Their journey would result in their attempted extradition by the Governor of Michigan who wished to make an example of the pair and order them back to the United States and their slave holders. The Canadian government did not agree, setting precedent for future U.S. and Canadian relations in regards to the protection of fugitive slaves. Ms. Frost recounts the excavation of the Blackburn's home in Toronto and retraces the path the pair traveled.

Karolyn Smardz Frost is the executive director of the Ontario Historical Society.

The Reagan Diaries
Douglas Brinkley, editor

22. The Assault on Reason - AL GORE!!!
:bounce: Sorry for yelling... I got all excited. :D

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Assault on Reason: How the Politics of Fear, Secrecy, and Blind Faith Subvert Wise Decision Making, Degrade Our Democracy, and Put Our Country and Our World in Peril
Al Gore

From an event at the Wilshire Theater in Beverly Hills, California, former Vice President Al Gore discusses his new book, "The Assault on Reason," with actor and author Harry Shearer. The book argues in favor of rational public debate, saying the Bush administration is part of a larger trend in which spin prevails over reason. He sites as an example the statistic that at the time the U.S. went to war with Iraq 70% of Americans thought Saddam Hussein was responsible for the September 11 attacks, and between a third and a half of Americans still believe that. Mr. Gore says it is impossible to make informed public policy decisions in a climate that is hostile to reason.

Former Vice President Al Gore is chairman of Current TV, a television network for young people based on viewer-created content. He is also chairman of Generation Investment Management, which focuses on sustainable investing. Mr. Gore served in the U.S. House 1977-1985 and the U.S. Senate 1985-1990. He was Vice President 1993-2001. He is the author of "Earth in the Balance" and"An Inconvenient Truth."

A Needle in the Right Hand of God: The Norman Conquest of 1066 and the Making and Meaning of the Bayeux Tapestry
R. Howard Bloch

The Bayeux Tapestry was created almost 1000 years ago and tells the story of events leading up to the Battle of Hastings and William the Conqueror's defeat of the English in 1066. The 230 foot long, 18 inch wide cloth was almost destroyed during the French Revolution and nearly fell into the hands of the Nazis during WWII. Using a digital version of the embroidered history, professor R. Howard Bloch guides the audience through the tapestry while explaining symbols, scenes, and events.

R. Howard Bloch is Director of Humanities Division and Sterling Professor of French at Yale. He has written numerous books and received Fulbright and Guggenheim fellowships.

Savage Peace: 1919 - Hope And Fear In America
Ann Hagedorn
Watch now - http://www.booktv.org/ram/history/0507/btv052007_1b.ram

Ann Hagedorn looks at America during the year 1919 as the country was recovering from World War I and the world wide flu pandemic. Entrusted with the hope of peace the author relays that instead a fear of Bolshevism swept the country and lead to a greater surveillance of the citizenry and enforcement of legislation intended to divert criticism of the government. Ms. Hagedorn recounts a twenty four year old J. Edgar Hoover's rise to the head of a new division of the Bureau of Investigation (the forbearer to the FBI) and Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer's protection of the country from "terrorists" in the form of Bolsheviks, anarchists, and general dissidents. The author focuses on both the political and the social factors that shaped the year.

Ann Hagedorn has been staff writer for news publications including The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. She is the author of three other books including "Beyond The River: The Untold Story Of The Heroes Of The Underground Railroad."

The Day The World Ended At Little Bighorn: A Lakota History
Joseph Marshall III

The Battle at Little Bighorn marked the last stand of General George Custer, who lost a great number of men in his army in the two-day battle with the Lakotan tribe. The popular retelling of the event notes that Gen. Custer suffered from a combination of poor planning and underestimating the number of Lakota. Joseph Marshall III disputes this record and revisits the battle that the Lakotans called The Greasy Grass Fight. Mr. Mashall contends that Gen. Custer and his men were defeated by a highly skilled and better trained army. The author places the battle within the greater context of American westward expansion and Native American history.

: Joseph Marshall III is the author of seven other books including "The Lakota Way: Stories and Lessons for Living" and "The Journey of Crazy Horse: A Lakota History." He was raised on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation and his first language is Lakota.

Peace Be Upon You: The Story Of Muslim, Christian, and Jewish Coexistence
Zachary Karabell

Zachary Karabell traces the historical instances of peaceful coexistence between Muslim, Christian, and Jewish people. The author contends that throughout the past fourteen centuries the different faiths have found common ground; from peaceful debate amongst scholars in the courts of the caliphs in Baghdad to medieval Spain where Jewish sages, Muslim philosophers, and Christian monks translated the meaning of God together. The author argues that the current state of religious tensions are solvable if one studies the past.

Zachary Karabell is the author of several books including, "The Last Campaign: How Harry Truman Won the 1948 Election" and "Parting the Desert: The Creation of the Suez Canal."

A Savage War of Peace: Algeria 1954-1962
Alistair Horne

Alistair Horne talks about "A Savage War of Peace," his study of the French-Algerian War. After the invasion of Iraq, Henry Kissinger recommended Mr. Horne's book to President Bush, arguing that there were many parallels between the French occupation of Algeria and the U.S. occupation of Iraq. This event took place at the Hillside Club in Berkeley, CA.

Alistair Horne, a fellow at St. Antony's College, Oxford, is the author of 18 books including "The Price of Glory: Verdun 1916" and "How Far from Austerlitz?: Napoleon 1805-1815." He is currently working on an authorized biography of Henry Kissinger.

Watch now - http://www.booktv.org/ram/feature/0507/btv050507_4b.ram

Lee Iacocca expresses his outrage at today's political and business leaders in his book, "Where Have All the Leaders Gone?" Iacocca is critical of President Bush’s handling of the Iraq War and says Congress refuses to tackle the biggest problems facing the United States. And business leaders, Iaccoa charges, are more interested in making money for themselves than building strong companies. In the book, Iaccoa also sizes up the 2008 presidential hopefuls.

Lee Iacocca is the former CEO of Chrysler. He is widely credited with saving the company when it faced bankruptcy in the late 1970s. His first book, "Iacocca: An Autobiography" was a best seller in the 1980s.

Robert Pinsky: I am not as yellow in complexion as my appearance on The Simpsons (which had no effect on the popularity of poetry, I would say)."
