While we are apportioning blame for all things, let's not leave out one particular person. |
|
Harry Reid.
Ineffectual, wimpy, spineless, far too trusting, and overall a big disappointment.
Further, let us also blame every single senator that voted for him as majority leader.
For everything we can cast at President Obama, Reid deserves tenfold.
Most of the shit we are pissed off about was stuff blocked by the Senate and while I am more than a bit disappointed with President Obama, he can't sign legislation that never makes it to his desk.

The absolute failure of the Democratic Senate to act in a manner even remotely resembling the behavior of a political bloc was disgraceful, and incredibly destructive to the country. This failure must be laid at the feet of the leadership, and of Reid in particular. The man played a pair of aces like all he had was jack high....

9. Where did I see that stat comparing the frequency of filibusters in different periods? |
|
Sounds like something you might recall.
They allowed a historically extraordinary and difficult measure to turn into an automatic minority veto on every bill without exception. Not, I have to conclude, simply by being "outmaneuvered."

4. After the obstruction during 2007-2008, he should have scrapped the 60 vote rule back in Jan 2009 |

8. I figure the Senate Dems will scrap the 60-vote rule just in time to give the power to the |

Republicans when they take over the Senate.

7. While I agree, may I point out that |
|
DU had it's collective panties in a wad this last election cycle over the idea that Harry might not get reelected? And suggested, over and over that Nevadans would be to blame if that happened . . .
Many on DU were concerned that whoever was chosen to replace Harry as Majority Leader would be even worse.
So, go back to throwing rocks - just remember that a couple of months ago DU was all about Harry getting reelected.

13. That is a totally different argument. I'm talking about his term as Majority Leader. |
|
His job was to ensure the best possible legislation pass the Senate, keep the democratic majority in line, and move the agenda set for him by the President forward.
I have no doubt as a senator he would be an ally, but as a leader in the Senate, he was about as effective as a sponge in the middle of the ocean.

I'd like to see someone like Barbara Boxer as majority leader. Not sure if she would want it, though.

If he had delivered something out of the Senate, the President would have signed it and then we wouldn't even be having this discussion/internal strife.

17. "Further, let us also blame every single senator that voted for him as majority leader." |

But you can't hold a whole fraternity responsible for the behavior of a few, sick twisted individuals. For if you do, then shouldn't we blame the whole fraternity system? And if the whole fraternity system is guilty, then isn't this an indictment of our educational institutions in general? I put it to you, Greg - isn't this an indictment of our entire American society? Well, you can do whatever you want to us, but we're not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America. Gentlemen!
I don't know why that Animal House quote suddenly came to mind. Something in the cadence of your post maybe.

21. In what way? Can you truly say he did a good job of leading? |
|
He might have been an effective leader when their was a semblance of civil discourse between the parties, but he seemed totally unable to respond to open hostility from the republicans and dumbfounded when faced with any opposition in his own caucus.
