Firefighters are battling a major blaze at a school in northwest Atlanta |
|
The fire was at the the Kipp West Atlanta Young Scholars (WAYS) Academy at 80 Lowery Blvd. NW.
Conditions were deteriorating and firefighters were in a defensive mode, according to dispatchers. Aerial video from Channel 2 Action News showed a huge fire that had burned through the roof of the three-story brick building.
Three ladder trucks were battling the fire. The school is across from the Ashby MARTA station. It is the former E.R. Carter Elementary School.
Kipp WAYS is a "free college preparatory charter school serving students of West Atlanta," according to the school's website. It is part of the Atlanta public school system.

Unknown at this time: cause of fire or if anyone was in the building.
CNN is also reporting this story. Video shows building completely engulfed, and part of roof apparently collapsed.
