Bush announces he will VETO gasoline price-gouging penalties
Edited on Sat May-26-07 04:14 PM by Bluebear

WASHINGTON (Dow Jones) -- President Bush is likely to veto legislation that would create hefty fines and criminal penalties for gasoline price-gouging, the White House said Wednesday.

The threat came as the House prepared to vote on a Democratic plan aimed at battling rising gasoline prices by requiring the Federal Trade Commission to define "price gouging." The bill would create fines and criminal penalties, including jail time, for industry executives found guilty of gouging.

The White House, in a formal statement of administration policy, said the legislation amounted to price controls that would hinder oil companies and retailers from responding to market signals, potentially worsening fuel shortages.

9. Yep. I wonder just how all the folks who thought Shit-for-Brains was just such a "regular guy" are
feeling these days when they have to take out a second mortgage to pay for gasoline.
I believe it was Bill Maher last night who said Shit-for-Brains is the only person who could fight a war for oil, and end up with none!!!

10. @ questions.
1. Isn't price gouging already illegal?

2. Does this bill have enough support in Congress to over-ride a veto?

Edited on Sat May-26-07 04:29 PM by Lobster Martini
There is no reason for the chimp to comment at all, except to show that he has the bigger banana.

First, it would only apply if he declared an energy emergency. All he has to do is not declare an emergency.

Second, the FTC would have to prove gouging, which is difficult if not impossible, as we found out when prices spiked after Katrina.

Basically, the only reason to veto this is to do to the Democrats what the sparrow did to him.

31. IF THE DEMS WERE SMART.....
<fat chance> they would get this bill passed, because EVERYONE is pissed about the high gas prices, and everyone knows that the oil companies are making TENS OF BILLIONS per quarter in PROFIT. And then, they could just sit back and wait for the little dictator-tot to veto the damned thing. At which point, we could target every republican and DLCer who voted w/ bush in their primary races.

Republicans are the only ones who can start a war for oil, and then not get some.

40. Didn't Bush go along with tariffs to protect the U.S. steel industry?
Aren't they a form of price controls?

Oh I get it, Bush will control prices to protect industries(big shareholders) but not the consumers.

You know, big shareholders, the haves and the have mores.
