Thank you.

The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund is a leader in supporting the men and women of the Armed Forces and their families. Begun in 2000 under the auspices of the Intrepid Museum Foundation, and established as an independent not-for-profit organization in 2003, the Fund has provided close to $60 million in support for the families of military personnel lost in service to our nation, and for severely wounded military personnel and veterans. These efforts are funded entirely with donations from the public, and hundreds of thousands of individuals have contributed to the Fund. 100% of contributions raised by the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund go towards these programs; all administrative expenses are underwritten by the Fund’s Trustees.

From 2000 to 2005 the Fund provided close to $20 million to families of United States military personnel lost in performance of their duty, mostly in service in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Fund provided unrestricted grants of $11,000 to each spouse and $5,000 to each dependent child; and $1,000 to parents of unmarried servicemembers. The payments were coordinated with the casualty offices of the Armed Forces, to ensure all families received these benefits. In 2005 federal legislation substantially increased the benefits granted to these families. With that mission therefore accomplished, the Fund redirected its support toward the severely injured.

3. Hate the war, not the warrior.
Nobody hates war more than those who've fought in it.

4. Memorial Day
This is remembrance of those lost; we cannot thank them in any way, but we do thank the families for their personal sacrifice. Regardless of beliefs, politics and dogma ,the selfless acts of courage and personal commitment to actually do something unselfish is not lost in vain.

History is full of the struggles of the selfish & the unselfish in almost every way; I am at a loss to justify any death, but I am humbled that they choose to walk in the path of death so willingly for any cause greater then themselves, right or wrong.

While we remember them, we are also encouraged to feed the homeless, help the helpless and think beyond ourselves to a peaceful humanity.

5. Those that have replied to my thread
are so articulate and thoughtful. Thank you for your thoughts. I felt that since there are other threads on DU thanking the fallen and all veterans, I would start one for those serving now in Iraq. I want them to know that they are supported. But of course I thank all veterans of all wars and conflicts.

7. Yes, thank you!

... my son served two tours in Iraq with the Marines in some of the most dreadful days.

The stress on the families is incredible, not knowing, daily reports of causalities, hoping it is not yours & crying when you learn it is not, but another's. Joy when they call, when they come home and they are safe.

We all loose a part of us when we learn of those wounded or killed, and we are even more wounded ourselves when we learn of neglect and more suffering at the hands of our own government, with lack of care.

Thank you hardly seems enough somehow! And yet always they think of us saying, "Don't worry, I'm OK!"

8. No "thanks" is not enough.
We need to do everything we can to bring them home. Thank God your son is safe after two tours, and I sincerely hope he doesn't have to go back. Happy Memorial Day to you and your family!

10. My daily and nightly thoughts and prayers are with you,
and I promise that we will continue the struggle to bring you home soon, and to provide you with everything you need while you are there.

To my fellow DUers: Sometimes the petitions and the requests to call and write and email our senators and representatives seem to be never ending and the results often frustrating, but this is one of the most important roles that we as DUers play. Abraham Lincoln said that it is impossible to have a war if the country isn't behind it, and it is our job tell them often and tell them loudly.

Kick and Recommended.
