All of this with Cindy Sheehan reminds me of when people post rude remarks about people when they
die. There are a group of us that post for people to have respect for the families of the dead or the dead. Usually those of us who ask people to have respect get beat up on because of free speech, we can say what we want, we don't walk the line, we don't lock step, we're angry and we aren't gonna take it anymore, if republic can say rude things about ours we can say rude about theirs, no one gets a pass not even a Democrat and all that bullshit.

After looking @ this whole thing with Cindy Sheehan I'm trying to figure out where are all those free speechers? Where are all those we don't lock step folk? Where are all the people yelling @ the top of their lungs about how no one gets a pass?

Yeah...where the hell are ya? Oh so I get it...we lock step but only on things y'all like. Well I gotta tell ya.

Being respectful is something you have to practice @ all times. It isn't shit you just pull out of your ass on things you like.

The culture of rudness that has grown here has been nurtured. So just look back at yourselves people. Take a look @ the crap you've posted and what rude things you've said when people died or when Democrats did things you didn't like. Think about when you've called Democrats names. If you're wondering where all this rudeness came from it started from us.

1. i agree, she has the right to be REALLY pissed off.... what have you lost.. i am in a rage about the
war.. i really thought they would do something.. and what they did looks bad. how many more will die and be maimed or mentally damaged for ever.. what ever it is they did looks bad for the troops.

i think it is despicable what some people here have called her here .. please just go back home to the Free Republic Speech Zone where you belong before you call her that again.

3. She has every right to be pissed off. DU has gotten out of hand. Too bad it took Cindy Sheehan
to show how bad it has gotten.

People need to show respect to one another and quit calling fellow Democrats horrible names.

I don't agree with what a lot of our Democrats do but why say things about them that Freepers would say.

That makes no dayum sense. When I see some posts around here I have to check the address to make sure I'm on a liberal blog. We treat our own like CRAP. And I'm SICK OF IT.

4. So when you're a liberal on a message board it is o.k. to behave like an asshole freeper.
I think not.

7. Just like a corporation, eh? It has no feelings
A message board (and shareholders of a corporation) ARE MADE UP OF PEOPLE - and WE DO HAVE FEELINGS!

In the aggregate, we shouldn't be less, WE SHOULD BE MORE!

12. Unfortunately civility is not universal amonst Dems.
People like Cindy have a right to do as they choose. And if she's displeased with whatever the Democratic leaders are doing she should be able to say so without reprisal.

14. Oh, I think I see now....msg boards "will be lead" into some kind of new groupthink
not personalities, no feelings. It's the NEW WORLD ORDER that we're sellin' dontcha know!!!!

It's new! It's cool! "I've been raised with 'technology', dontcha' know (but I don't know how to do a d*mn thing for myself!...I don't know how to grow anything, or sew anthing, or fix anything, or start a fire, or how to replace fuse ..... I know don't know how electricity REALLY works, but I know when I flip a switch "it's there"!!!)

We're doomed.

15. Trolls - true to form. DUers - not to form. What's going on - one
thing that stands out is a certain ganging up - multiples of people ganging up and spewing stuff that is troll like - not making a case for the position taken and by ganging up - descending to what snarky high schoolers do.

Republicans are the ones who demand that Dems be saints. Take it from there.

16. Reminds me of when some of the most insightful posters on DU
get Tombstoned because they aren't parroting "popular opinion". It's only to DU's loss that they go (and aren't allowed to re-enter). And the posters that leave w/o being t'stoned get the "don't let the Lord hit ya where the good lord split ya" response is pretty sickening, imo.

17. I think there's a crucial difference here, though.

The recently-deceased who've received Bronx cheers here on DU had a history of causing harm -- whether to individuals, certain groups, or our society and political system as a whole. They didn't get a "pass" because they didn't earn one. Quite the opposite. They generally earned the criticism they received.

Cindy Sheehan certainly can't be lumped in with that sort, not by any reasonable standard. She didn't do anything to warrant such condemnation, as far as I can see. She gets a pass, but it's not free, either. She earned it by what she advocates: an end to the injustice of a war based on lies.

Respect is reality-based, I'd argue. When people point out that Gerald Ford's legacy is tainted by his pardon of Nixon, that's reality, one we can easily see from our vantage point in 2007. Or when people quote Jerry Falwell's own words to illustrate who he was and what he stood for. Same thing: a reality he himself created.

But when someone calls Ms. Sheehan an "attention whore" who only wanted to see herself on television... well, what's that based on? Where are the facts that can support such a statement? I'd argue there are no facts available to make that case. No legitimate logic behind the anger a handful of people have directed her way.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that, I think it's kind of a false comparison you're making here. No one gets a free pass. But if there's a single standard for granting respect -- a trulu free pass, if you will -- then the notion of respect loses all meaning, IMO.
