I just got this email about immigration - "I'm Going to Mexico"
I received this from someone I thought was a liberal democrat. I did reply - it is at the bottom.

Dear President Bush:

I'm about to plan a little trip with my family and extended family, and I would like to ask you to assist me. I'm going to walk across the border from the U.S. into Mexico, and I need to make a few arrangements. I know you can help with this.

I plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration quotas and laws. I'm sure they handle those things the same way you do here.

So, would you mind telling your buddy, President Vicente Fox, that I'm on my way over? Please let him know that I will be expecting the following:

1. Free medical care for my entire family.
2 English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might need, whether I use them or not.
3. All government forms need to be printed in English.
4. I want my kids to be taught by English-speaking teachers.
5. Schools need to include classes on American culture and history.
6. I want my kids to see the American flag flying on the top of the flag pole at their school with the Mexican flag flying lower down.
7. Please plan to feed my kids at school for both breakfast and lunch.
8. I will need a local Mexican driver's license so I can get easy access to government services.
9. I do not plan to have any car insurance, and I won't make any effort to learn local traffic laws.
10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from Pres. Fox to leave me alone, please be sure that all police officers speak English.
11. I plan to fly the U.S. flag from my house top, put flag decals on my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I do not want any complaints or negative comments from the locals.
12. I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, and don't enforce any labor laws or tax laws.
13. Please tell all the people in the country to be extremely nice and never say a critical word about me, or about the strain I might place on the economy.

I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things for all the people who come to the U.S. from Mexico. I am sure that Pres. Fox won't mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely.

However, if he gives you any trouble, just invite him to go quail hunting with your V.P.

MY RESPONSE:

Please keep the following in mind while planning your trip to Mexico:

You may not want to "walk across the border from the US into Mexico" because
it really isn't quite that easy. Instead you may want to pay someone a large
sum of money to sneak you into the country. Never mind that this someone may
not be the most trustworthy person and he just might leave you inside a
locked trailer to die in the heat.

Taking your extended family probably isn't going to happen. It is very
expensive to pay for the whole family to cross the border. In fact, the main
reason someone crosses the border is because they are struggling for a
better life for their family and money must be sent home.

I sure hope you are not very close to your family because chances are you
may never see them again. It is quite common for families to be divided by
the border. (A typical scenario is a father and one child are legal
residents, while a mother another child are left in the other country
unsuccessful at immigrating legally. The father and son cannot afford to
give up their jobs to return to their country, so the family must live
apart.)

Since you will probably live in fear of deportation you may not want to seek
the free medical care or any other social services. And if you do need
emergency medical care, probably the only thing that may make you want to
risk deportation, hopefully you will not be denied assistance or run into
any type of language barrier.

I also hope that the government and society do not blame your innocent
children for your choice to live in a foreign country. I hope that your
children are able to receive an education. I hope they are not denied
breakfast and lunch just because of decisions that you made.

I wish you luck in obtaining your local driver's license since you certainly
will need transportation to get the your job. Now it is very unlikely that
you will have a "nice job". More than likely you will be doing some job that
would not interest the majority of the citizens in that country. You will
probably be doing unskilled low paying work. You may be working in the
fields picking crops, or working as a maid.

I hope that you are not taken advantage of by an unethical employer. Paying
illegal workers below minimum wage is very common and results in higher
profits for the illegal employee (that can have the outcome of higher taxes
paid by the employer). Since the employer is hiring illegals it is not
likely that labor laws will be enforced and you may find yourself working in
substandard and dangerous conditions. Please be careful and do not get
injured.

If for some reason you do run into trouble and need assistance I sure hope
you are able to communicate with the government officials. I would hate to
think that you were unable to seek help from the police. And God forbid that
the police use any unnecessary and inappropriate force just because you
look and talk differently than they do.

If you do decide to celebrate your culture and your heritage I hope your
celebration will be met with the same tolerance and compassion that you as
an American, blessed with freedom, should be willing to show. As an American
you should be astutely aware of the freedom of expression, so do enjoy
flying your flag and putting decals on your car.

And finally, I sure do hope everyone in the country is nice and that they do
not blame you for the "strain" you might place on the economy. Foreign
workers and schoolchildren should not be blamed for a country's economic
problems. Chances are the government is responsible for it's own poor economy
by wasting money on many unnecessary things. They may be even throwing away
billions of dollars on a senseless war.

I shudder to think that a country could actually put the blame for their
problems on a particular group of people. To me that is reminiscent of what
Hitler did. He was able to convince Germany that the Jews were to blame for
all of their problems. Everyone knows how that turned out.

So there you go ... just a few words of advice to help you enjoy your trip
to Mexico. Good luck!

P.S. It is now Pres. Calderón

1. Nice response
I doubt I'd have been anywhere near so polite. I wonder if all the other descendants of unwelcome immigrants will now quit the US and return it to the descendants of the Precolumbian population. How typical of them to be six months out of date on the President's name.

3. I don't think this was meant to be appreciated by a liberal democrat.
More like a fundie thing. My mom got an email from her hyper-religious boss that spewed the same crap. It's rightwing with a twist of apathy.

Number 6 from the email just sounds plain stupid.

I like your response though!

7. Awesome:)
Awesome and well thought out reply. What was the outcome?

As well as not knowing who the current Mexican President is, I doubt that the sender could say which day is Mexican Independence Day. Hint: it is not May 5th.

My sister was one of the original ones it was sent to (I think it originated from one of her "friends") so I am anxious to get her reply.

10. For those who asked I got a response to my reply all e-mail
From my sister of all people. After saying that I have too much time on my hands, here is what she wrote back (my response to her response is at the end):

If you break the law there are consequences. They may range from:

MY RESPONSE:

I am ashamed of you . All along you have been pretending to be a liberal Democrat yet you do not seem to have the compassion for people who are just trying to make a better life for themselves. You see them as criminals, I see them as humans. Our country takes advantage of cheap labor so the law breaking businesses and employers bear much of the blame. Our country has allowed the infiltration of illegal aliens because it helps further the capitalistic motto of more money, more money. This motto is right in line with Republican thinking.

Also, the fact that six years after 9/11 our borders are still not secure is just flabbergasting to me!!!! What in the hell is our government doing??!!!

I agree that immigrants should follow the rule of the law when coming into our country but our country has not done a very good job at enforcing the law. Now all of a sudden everyone is screaming about illegal aliens and how they are taking jobs away from Americans. Please spare me that diatribe. Lazy uneducated American citizens would much rather take advantage of social services than actually having to do hard labor. Many of these same citizens have never contributed to society, have never paid social security.

There are no easy answers as to how to handle 12 million illegal immigrants but I prefer to err on the side of compassion. I guess there is just something about being a liberal Democrat that allows me to have empathy for my fellow man.

I also know that it is not right to imply that all illegals are from Mexico and that they are all here to take advantage of our system. I also have researched the stats concerning how much money these immigrants contribute to our country and that many do pay taxes even if they are here illegally. Here are some excerpts from a Knight Ridder article:

The fact that illegal immigrants pay taxes at all will come as news to many Americans. A stunning two-thirds of illegal immigrants pay Medicare, Social Security and personal income taxes. ... immigrants aren't flocking to the United States to mooch off the government. According to a study by the Urban Institute, the 1996 welfare reform effort dramatically reduced the use of welfare by undocumented immigrant households, exactly as intended. And another vital thing happened in 1996: the Internal Revenue Service began issuing identification numbers to enable illegal immigrants who don't have Social Security numbers to file taxes.
Close to 8 million of the 12 million or so illegal aliens in the country today file personal income taxes using these numbers, contributing billions to federal coffers. No doubt they hope that this will one day help them acquire legal status — a plaintive expression of their desire to play by the rules and come out of the shadows.

What's more, aliens who are not self-employed have Social Security and Medicare taxes automatically withheld from their paychecks. Since undocumented workers have only fake numbers, they'll never be able to collect the benefits these taxes are meant to pay for. Last year, in 2005, the revenues from these fake numbers — that the Social Security administration stashes in the “earnings suspense file” — added up to 10 percent of the Social Security surplus. The file is growing, on average, by more than $50 billion a year.

Beyond federal taxes, all illegals automatically pay state sales taxes that contribute toward the upkeep of public facilities such as roads that they use, and property taxes through their rent that contribute toward the schooling of their children. The non-partisan National Research Council found that when the taxes paid by the children of low-skilled immigrant families — most of whom are illegal — are factored in, they contribute on average $80,000 more to federal coffers than they consume.

On a side note: Knight Ridder is one of the most respected news agencies. They actually questioned the Iraq war when our administration was planning to invade. They did not back down on their reporting due to fear of seeming "unpatriotic". They asked tough questions in 2003 and reported facts about the 9/11/Iraq connection (there was none). Unfortunately the rest of the media allowed Bush and his ilk to intimidate them. Google Knight Ridder (they have recently been bought by another news service) to learn more about their stellar reporting.

So tell me. What has happened to my once liberal sister? Has living with a Republican rubbed off on you or is it the fact that you now live in Texas, a border state? As for having too much time on my hands - to me there is always enough time to show compassion to other human beings and to set the record straight where I can. Also, immigrants are not comparing their plight to the hard-working Jews. I made this juxtaposition showing how a society can so easily speak out against a particular group of people which can incite racial biases and hate.

Take Care!
