Are there people who are so starved for simple human attention that they will do almost anything to get it? Are porn stars attention whores? Are movies stars attention whores?

Are politicians in general attention whores?

I guess anyone who draws attention to themselves is an attention whore, or is this too broad?

Although it has historically been used in derogatory terms to describe a certain profession women predominantly have it is also used to describe those who have abandoned their principles for personal gain.

In this sense I think the 3rd definition fits much of the media in the last decade.

It is an insult with little meaning, frequently used on media personalities or on people who draw attention to themselves. Anyone can call anyone an attention whore and still use it accurately. It is not meant to define a specific action. It is meant to insult a person.
