Bagism in the Modern Age
"NAÏVE: When it comes to pointless propaganda, who can beat honeymooners John Lennon and Yoko Ono? They have started a week’s sleep-in against war and violence. Which seems a pretty naïve protest …."

John and Yoko included a 20-page booklet, titled "The Press," in their Wedding Album. Some of the articles included in it, like the one quoted above, do not include the name of the author or the newspaper.

Others do, such as Herbert Williams’ "These phoney stunts that call for no sacrifice." He wrote, "You can dismiss the seven day love-in by John Lennon and Yoko Ono as just a silly publicity stunt if you like, but I believe you’d be mistaken. I think they really mean it when they say this is a ‘demonstration for peace.’ But that makes it all the more contemptible. ….

"The contrast between the cosiness of the Lennon-Ono lie-in and the agony of Vietnam and Biafra is such that to claim one has any bearing on the other is a piece of colossal insensitivity. … It’s become quite fashionable to attract publicity by doing something which is bizarre, but not too discomforting. …. A token fast involves such minimal suffering that the world rightly takes little notice. People are too busy to bother about students’ stunts. The same phoney atmosphere permeates the demonstrations against American policy in Vietnam which occur from time to time."

Another article ("Yoko, Lennon Love-In ‘Disgusting’ ") notes that, "Being rich doesn’t mean everything. Pictures of John Lennon and Yoko Ono having a ‘love lie-in’ was one of the most disgusting sights I have seen. If wealth does this to people then I do not want it." The article goes on to say that the Lennon-Ono protest was offensive to the person’s deeply-held Christian beliefs. "It has been said that power corrupts. I pray to God this doesn’t happen to me. … There will always be freaks and exhibitionists who hog the television cameras while the Mr. Averages are ignored."

The articles and cartoons reflect the vicious attitude towards Yoko that was sadly common at that time. Part of that was because she was female, of course. And much of it had to do with her being an Asian-American. At a time when Uncle Sam was fighting in the jungles of southeast Asia, it offended some people to see her in bed with the former "mop-top" member of the Fab Four.

It was one thing to have that cheeky Lennon ask the people in the good seats to "rattle their jewelry." But under the influence of that dragon-lady Yoko, he started to meet with suspicious characters, and support offensive causes. There were people who hated them, and were extremely concerned about their peace campaign. There is a film "The U.S. vs John Lennon" that details this conflict.

At the time, John used to say that he and Yoko were willing to be the world’s clowns, if that’s what it took to make a commercial for peace. It has been shown since then that the attacks really did hurt them. I suppose that pain played a role in John and Yoko’s decision to take a step back from the public eye in 1975. (I also remember that all the attacks on Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., when he spoke out against the war, hurt him.)

Without exception, every time I have noted that I see similarities between the John & Yoko peace campaign and Cindy Sheehan’s campaign, at least one person will respond, "Well, she’s no John Lennon." And that’s true. Cindy isn’t John, and she isn’t Martin. But what is important is that she heard them, and she understood their message. They both asked people to do their best to advocate for peace. They both recognized that even the most sincere people may make mistakes – as they had -- and they made clear that it was important to not let the fear of making a mistake keep one from trying.

John Lennon and Martin Luther King are gone now. It’s no use waiting for them, or someone the critics might agree is just like them, comes back to earth to lead the next anti-war campaign. It’s time for the Mr. And Ms. Averages to do it for themselves. And when the critics attack Mr. And Ms. Average, like they attacked John and Martin, it means the peace campaign is on track.

Thank you Cindy Sheehan.

Cindy Sheehan stood up when no one else would, risking her life and reputation to advocate for peace. We owe her an enormous debt of gratitude, and anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool.

As happened with John and Yoko, and Martin, and Malcom for that matter, Cindy suffered attacks from both within and without the movement. Visionaries have that effect on people, because they are not following the crowd, but their own hard-won wisdom and instincts. Cindy didn't have a polished message of the sort we have become accustomed to in this age of spinmeisters. She had a cry of anguish and pain and a simple question: "For what 'noble cause' did my son die?"

She has been the spearhead of the antiwar movement for a long time now - it is no wonder she has become weary and distraught. I hope she is showered with love and appreciation as she becomes a warrior in repose.

13. I was listening
to some of them on C-SPAN this morning. The word "hate" is not too strong. They channel their frustrations and rage towards her, as if she is to blame for the hell that Bush and Cheney's lies have created. They hate her.

When an honest history of this era is made sometime in the future, Cindy will have a special place. A controversial one, to be sure. And a place of honor.

12. Nice commentary. As Jesus said, a prophet is without honor in his (or her) own country
And Bill Hicks (another neglected prophet):

The world is like a ride in an amusement park and when you choose to go on it you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and around and around and it has thrills and chills and it's very brightly coloured and it's very loud. And it's fun - for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time, and they begin to question; is this real? Or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, and they say, "Hey, don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because... this is just a ride."

And we kill those people...

(Mark 6:4) But Jesus, said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.

Also interesting ...
(Mark 6:11) And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

There is something unnatural about naked bodies. Even for art's sake, let's keep people dressed. The Beatles were doing pretty darned good, until that Yoko forced John to pose naked for that terrible album cover.

I am one of those who are not thrilled with everything Ms Sheehan has done. However, for a reason I could not quite articulate, I was disappointed by her withdrawal and the reaction it inspired

"They both recognized that even the most sincere people may make mistakes – as they had -- and they made clear that it was important to not let the fear of making a mistake keep one from trying."

We should not let our fear that Ms Sheehan will err lead us into being angry with her. She is on our side.

It's clear to me now that we need every bit of help we can get; Even from those we disagree with. Friendly fire happens. Just because someone does something that you think hurts your "cause" that does not necesarily make them an enemy. They may still be an ally, and they may still deserve your support and assistance, just as you need their support and their assistance.

If you examine earlier movements, you'll see that there has never been a straight path to glory. Success has always been the result of many actors pushing in the same general direction, even if at times, they worked at cross-purposes with each other. During the Civil Rights Movement, the more staid NAACP competed with MLK Jr's SNCC, which was criticized in turn by the more radical Black Panthers. Yet somehow, we still managed to advance the rights of minorities. I see a similar dynamic at work here

21. Cindy Sherman is Cindy Sherman not
John & Yoko, Martin Luther King. She's Cindy Sherman a housewife from Vallejo,Ca who's son was killed in war founded on lies and engineered fear. I loathe the comparison to her so-called predecessors. None of them lost their kids. None of them camped out for weeks on end at a pig farm in Texas. They all did other things in a very different time.
She deserves better from some of us at DU. I hope once she's home and rested that she is able to build upon the life she left.

You "loathe" the comparison to other noted activists? What an odd response. Altogether.

28. "John You Went Too Far This Time"
Let's all get up and dance to a song that wasn't a hit before your mother was born! This is a "moldie oldie" by Rainbow, who younger DUers may know as Sissy Spacek:

"Everything you asked of me I did John,
from holding hands to living in a sunlight submarine ...
but since that picture I don't think our love
will be the same."

57. True
that it was in response to the Two Virgins LP. No dance music there! (I do not think it was a joke on her part, based on Nicholas Schaffner's book.)

Also from Schaffner's book, one of the early warnings about the danger of the Beatles: "Psycho-poiticians are using the Beatle music .... to hypnotize American youth and prepare them for future submission to subversive control ... a systematic plan geared to making a generation of American youth mentally and emotionally unstable." -- Communism, Hypnotism, and the Beatles, by Rev. David a Noebel.

I confess to listening to the Beatles as a youth. That may explain my advocating that we dance to Rainbow's song on this thread.

39. I picked up
a copy of the DVD "John & Yoko: Give Peace a Song." It's about their "Infamous Bed-In ... A New Documentary from the archives of the CBC." I haven't watched it yet, but it looks fun. It covers their stay in the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal, which started on May 26, 1969.

There are a number of special guests, ranging from Tommy Smothers to Petula Clark to Dick Gregory. On June 1, the final day of the bed-in, John posted some infamous lyrics on the suite's walls, and everybody sang a wonderful anti-war song.

I'd like to ask you all to count off by 1's, and we should sing this song. I'd like to dedicate it to someone that I really admire. Her name is Cindy Sheehan.

Give Peace a Chance

Two, one two three four

50. Well said...
Thank you for such a thought provoking post, as always...

54. A bit early
Give it a few years and we'll see if Cindy has the same impact as a John Lennon, or a Ghandi, or an MLK. Seems a bit early to bestow that upon her.

56. Far more important
than sitting back a few years to determine what her impact will be, is to actually do something. That was King's message. That was Gandhi's message. That was Lennon's message, too.

In fact, I'm not saying she is -- or isn't -- a King, Gandhi, or Lennon. Those people who think I am saying that she is, are missing my point. I think they are missing her point, as well.

59. I think that
it's important for her to know that we hear her, understand her message, and appreciate her work.

I think that she has served this nation well. Not the corporate entity that the Cheneyites want to replace our Constitutional democracy. But the real America.

60. Kick
Once again, H2Oman, you nailed it. I just do not understand how Democrats could have been so harsh in their criticisms of her. I could understand it coming from the GOPigs, but not from Dems.
