Memorial Day - Her eyes bled

I stood in the Tampa airport yesterday and saw a young man with a camouflage backpack. He hugged a lineup of family members over and over.
It looked like they were all there. A sister, mother father, others - all quite obviously related.
The mother especially just would not let him go. Her sobs were deep and wrenching. Her eyes kept bleeding so much water, as he hugged others her hands had to hold her face.

"I hope you're not going anywhere dangerous" I said to the young man, after we were side by side in the shuttle to the airplane's gate.
"Not today", he said, " but in two weeks I'm off to Iraq".

"We don't know each other" I said back,"but I'll think of you every day until this war is over".
Then I turned away to hide my own crying eyes.
