CINDY SHEEHAN: Are insulting threads about her the real sentiment of DU?

Cindy Sheehan mentioned DU in the title and first paragraph of her column on ending her work as an anti-war activists.

Unfortunately, I suspect a handful of people were starting and sustaining those threads, making them look popular, but if we take a poll on her contribution, I suspect it will be lopsided in her favor.

I have found most of our discussions here valuable and many people are well-informed.

I have also noticed that more progressive ideas or candidates are sometimes loudly mocked, making it look like those ideas or people are unpopular, but when put to a vote, a very different picture emerged.

Plus there is also the time frame to consider; it's possible to respect Cindy Sheehan's contributions while thinking now is a good time for her to step off stage.

My actual opinion is that Sheehan is not an attention whore, but that I can see where someone might have that opinion.

I don't think Sheehan is quite in MLK's league. But in fairness I don't know that there's been more than a couple dozen people in the history of the world who have been.

The term Attention Whore means, as near as I can tell, someone who seeks to gratify themselves by getting attention. While the term attention whore is certainly not the nicest term one can use, and probably shouldn't be used on Cindy Sheehan, I do understand how people might come to the conclusion that Sheehan is a person who is trying to gratify herself by getting attention. I don't agree with that assessment, however.

I understand the term when it might be applied to those media whores -- you know, men in late fifties, reading teleprompters and pretending to be really excited about Shrek the Third.

That's 'whoring' because everyone KNOWS that highly trained educated men in their late 50s have virtually NO interest in a childrens movies and so it's a ritual they are paid to perform.

I hate that when men get stupid and act, and then want me to treat them and their opinions/propaganda as it was a fact. Or even an legitimate opinion.

I've been called an attention whore - frankly other than Skinner I don't know that anybody gets paid around here, and yet I've seen the term used on others.

Media Whore and Attention Whore are two different terms though.

but that's the point. She and her friends and colleagues have continued to remind us of what we want to put out of our minds becuse we feel helpless.

and people who don't necessarily agree with all so-called "progressive" ideas or candidates are sometimes called Republican lite or freepers.

Insults are hurled from both ends of the spectrum here and even from the middle, why Mrs. Sheehan felt compelled to end her crusade as a result of some anonymous poster on a political message board is puzzling to me, if that is indeed the case.

In any event, I wish her well and I admire her deeply for her efforts. She deserves as much.

There is a range of opinion about Sheehan here at DU, from "I agree with everything she does" to "Her departure is not a loss". More probably view her favorably than not, but DU doesn't speak with one voice.

Personally, I think she contributed greatly when she first took up the cause, but I certainly don't agree with everything she has said and done.
