China Sentences Former Head National Food & Drug Administration to Death
SHANGHAI, May 29 — The former head of China’s top food and drug safety agency was sentenced to death today after pleading guilty to corruption and accepting bribes, according to the state-controlled news media.

Zheng Xiaoyu, who served as director of China’s Food & Drug Administration from its founding in 1998 until mid 2005, was detained in February as part of a government investigation into the agency that is supposed to be the nation’s food and drug watchdog.

Two other top agency officials were also detained in February.

20. What this guy has done is waaaay worse than anything in this country
the latest fiasco involved selling highly toxic pufferfish as monkfish (a harmless fish that many in this country eat). The FDA caught that particular disaster as it was imported. The guy is of course is now being attacked because he has endangered the "reputation" of Chinese exports (see melamine scandal) otherwise I doubt that China would be making an example of him. As much as it bothers me to know this is really a PR move on China's part, this guy deserves any and all punishments brought on him.

16. I used to be against the death penalty. Not any more.
Not since they (meaning those who control the covert factions of the national security state apparatus) pulled off and got away with 9/11.

Now I'm all for bringing back the guillotine.
Set it up in the rose garden.
Now that would be reality TV worth watching.

3. This explains the timing of the pet food scandal
Seems that corruption related to tainted food has been a problem in China for some time, now.

That only came out after the trial of Mr. Xiaoyu ("IOU") sorta made it impossible to keep the awful truth under wraps.

Has anyone ever gone back and looked at the stuff we've imported for human consumption from China over the past nine years? I'm sure it would make a fascinating study for a CDC/FDA/FBI taskforce.

21.  a lot of food imports from China have actually been halted by the FDA
in the past few years because of many and various problems. Here's link to the FDA site which talks about imports:
http://www.fda.gov/ora/import/default.htm
The melamine was in PET FOOD which the FDA has not been inspecting the way they were inspecting food intended for human consumption

4. Yeah, and They are Really into Re-cycling Too!
What's his blood type? Anyone need a new liver? I Bet you that the Chinese even re-cycle the pillows they use to snuff out their condemned prisoners.

8. I'm not a fan of the New China either or the death penality however
I am a fan of accountability which is more than I've seen here in the USA lately.

Iraq, Katrina, pet food deaths, illegal wiretapping, outing a CIA agent, etc. etc.

7. I HATE the death penalty
PRC is one of the countries that actually makes us look good. They execute over 3000 of their own every fucking year. They are fascist assholes. I really really hate them. It distracts from the whole story that they went this far.

14. heard this story on the way to work today
on NPR (don't ask me why I still listen to that selective pablum...so watered down compared to just a few years ago, but I digress).

I asked the Chinese scientists that work in my lab about it when I got in. They told me that about 20 people died from this asshole, so I suppose he is being executed for murder, albeit indirect murder.

But I am still against the death penalty, and I do not like the Chinese government at all with their execution vans. Still, I very much like my Chinese colleagues even though they are blind to the human rights abuses in their country (for example, they thinkn the students got what they deserved at Tienman square because they were disrupting and hurt many police officers). A major cultural difference exists between the West and the East when it comes to individualism vs. societal cohesion.
