Please use this phrase as much as you can. It is not a war. It is an occupation.

1. No - war is the balder and uglier term.
People are dying and lives are being destroyed; "war" serves just fine, thank you. "Occupation" is more bloodless, more bureaucratic, more of a banality of evil sort of term, on the other hand.

The song doesn't go "Occupation - what's it good for? Absolutely nothing".

3. Perhaps you should read this...
http://www.rockridgeinstitute.org/research/lakoff/occupation/view?searchterm=occupation

Nothing against Edwin Starr, but I trust George Lakoff's political instincts more.

4. I have great respect for Professor Lakoff, and I think I see his point here;
But no one's ever been tried as an "Occupation Criminal". Calling this anything other than a war lets the Dear Leader (and us as well, for not stopping it) off too easy. Just my opinion, of course.

12. ocuupation has its own set of rules under international law -->
an occupying force is responsible for the welfare and security of the occupied peoples. the occupier must keep the peace and protect the occupied peoples. the USA is failing to honor the international standards and is failing to keep the peace. all these deaths from bombings are legally the fault of the US military.

5. Word! I'm a member of this choir ... and strive always to puncture the 'war' meme.
The international laws covering the actions and duties of occupation forces are clear - and we've violated damned near every precept. Illegal war. Illegal occupation. Crimes against peace. Crimes against humanity. There is neither moral nor legal legitimacy to our actions in Iraq, imho.

8. Invasion is better than occupation, I think;
It does underscore the illegal, aggressive nature of this abomination.

7. It's not a war? Thanks for telling me.
I guess they're not troops either. Perhaps we should call them Occupational Service Units.

Let's bring our Occupational Service Units Pre-Occupational Non-Occupation Origin.

Perform Intercourse, not Occupation.

13. I've been doing that for a while
When the RW nuts talk about "losing the war" by pulling out, I just tell them, "no, we just have to choose when we will end the post war occupation".
