Jon Stewart: Meet the Enemy
Red Eye for the Straight Guy

Greg Gutfeld has been fired or kicked upstairs in most every job he’s had. Will he be able to make Fox News safe for the squeamish New York media elite?

“You may disagree with me, but you can’t stop watching .… ”: The host preps for a taping of his Fox News talk show, Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld.

If Red Eye isn’t quite Fox’s answer to The Daily Show—that distinction belongs to Fox’s truly awful The ½ Hour News Hour—the show’s giddy roster of New York–area media stars and camera-craving bloggers, who are probably unknown and unattractive to the vast majority of Fox viewers, is evidence that Fox wishes to make itself a respectable place to do business for the next-generation New York media elite.

While the show runs largely on jokes, riffs and loopy news bits, it’s prevented from relaxing too much into apolitical anarchy by the hand of Fox News president Roger Ailes, who dropped sultry conservative Toronto Sun columnist Rachel Marsden smack in the middle of the merry band of pranksters to make it clear that politics with a rightward bent is still the Fox brand, particularly if it arrives on long legs.

So far, about 300,000 viewers are tuning in to the show, which is taped at 8:40 p.m. and airs at 2 a.m. The format is unscripted. In the studio with Mr. Gutfeld are his sidekick, Bill Schulz (a Muppet-like fellow that Mr. Gutfeld described as “the funniest person I’ve ever met in my life”); the coltish (and Coulter-ish) Ms. Marsden; and guests, who recently have included gadfly Christopher Hitchens, comic Jackie Mason, blogger Rachel Sklar, Fox News correspondent Laurie Dhue and redneck comedian Larry the Cable Guy. The topics whiz past—most segments barely last a minute. Mr. Gutfeld has a stack of blue cards with things written on them such as “woman’s severed finger found in purse,” and he’ll toss the conversational ball around.

1. He might be the enemy, but i don't think that JS has much to worry about.

What ever happened to the much touted half hour news hour that FAUX was pushing?

Is this show it?

5. You think that JS has to worry? Why?

I mean you could say that another fake news show will muddy the waters, but it isn't even going up agains his show or Colbert's Report.

Regardless, FAUX News doesn't do funny...or information for that mater.

Describing them would take too much of my time on earth so I won't other than to say that at 2AM I couldn't imagine more a buzzstomper

6. This guy just sounds like a fucking mess:
“I have not thought about going to a gym. My diet has gone to hell; I smoke more. I don’t think my drinking has gotten worse; it’s just more intense. I need it—and I’ve never needed it. The one thing I hate about it is, the people around you, who you love, you end up being kind of mean to them. Because you feel they don’t understand. And it’s a very wrong kind of thing.”

..."woman's severed finger found in purse"???

Yeah, he already sounds very funny and insightful.

9. Right Wingers don't do funny. They don't do satire. They don't understand it.

It always comes off sounding mean spirited.

12. I think we should take a cue from Hugo Chavez, and simply start pulling some
of these licenses to use our PUBLIC airwaves. We have every right to do it, when a broadcaster fails to operate in the public interest. These giant news monopolies have no inherent right to broadcast on OUR airwaves. Our airwaves are regulated because the bandwidth is limited (unlike print media, which anyone may engage in--theoretically anyway.) We can regulate and condition that PRIVILEGE in any way that we choose, as a sovereign people--including busting up all news monopolies and news/entertainment/war industry conglomerates, and awarding licenses to small, competitive news organizations that will provide REAL news and opinion, and diversify the airwaves.

At one time, for instance, we had the "Fairness Doctrine" that required a fair balance of opinion on political issues on EVERY TV AND RADIO STATION IN THE COUNTRY. That doctrine became a casualty of the Reagan Era of Greed (along with a number of other casualties, such as the progressive tax), preparatory to the Bush Era of Naked Looting. 24/7 fascist propaganda--to demoralize and disempower the progressive majority--is a necessary tool of ungodly profits, thievery and unjust war.

The Chavez government has denied RCTV's license renewal due to RCTV's active participation in a violent military coup attempt--in which Chavez was kidnapped and threatened with death, the Constitution was suspended, and the National Assembly (Congress) and the court system were shut down. RCTV hosted meetings of the perpetrators and broadcast disinformation to the public during the coup attempt.* ALL the corporate news media in Venezuela supported the coup--all are anti-democratic in their views--and I understand another of them, Globovision, is under investigation on the coup issue. But, really, the Venezuelan people have the sovereign right to deny a license to use the PUBLIC airwaves on far less grounds than these. As do we. Failure to broadcast a wide spectrum of opinion can be, and should be, grounds for losing your license. Arguably, our war profiteering corporate news monopolies did far worse than that, on the war and on our stolen elections in particular. No democracy has to put up with this crap. We need to take back the airwaves (after we restore our right to vote)!

-------------------

*(Irish filmmakers did a wonderful documentary, "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," during the attempted coup in Venezuela, including the role of RCTV in trying to topple the elected government. It's available on DVD at AxisOfLogic.com.)
