Tom Delay: "God has spoken to me"

http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2007/06/04/070604fa_fact_goldberg?printable=true

<snip>

Wilde had a brief message for DeLay. “The church is strong,” he said. When he left, I asked DeLay if he thought the church—evangelicals, who make up the core of his support—was strong enough to save the Republican Party. In this case, he agreed with Gingrich. “We’re having a time of it right now,” he said. “We don’t have a good shot at winning 2008. I’m not saying we don’t have a shot, but it’s not good. It’s going to take six years to rebuild.”

DeLay says that when, in the coming years, he is not fighting the indictment in Texas (he insists that he is not guilty) he will be building a conservative grass-roots equivalent of MoveOn.org. “God has spoken to me,” he said. “I listen to God, and what I’ve heard is that I’m supposed to devote myself to rebuilding the conservative base of the Republican Party, and I think we shouldn’t be underestimated.” He said that Republicans should spend their impending exile reminding themselves what they stand for. “I see this as a cleansing process, where you can return to your principles, which are order, justice, and freedom—the basic principles of the conservative movement. We have to redefine government based on conservative principles, we have to win the war against our culture, and we have to win the war on terror.”

Although since none of them believe in evolution, that's gonna be tricky.

6. MOVEBACKWARD.ORG ??
delays conservative equivalent to Moveon.org ?? Back to the good old days when lynchings of nonwhites was not something to be hidden, when blowing up gay bars was a walk in the park; when women's place was in the bedroom and in the kitchen? Yeah, tom delay and the good old days. Actually God told tom, hey ya little shit, your ass is mine.

9. He's going to form a "grass-roots equivalent of MoveOn.org?"
What the bloody hell is MoveOn? At least, that's how it all started. So, if DeLay builds and "equivalent" will he then admit that his new "grass-roots" organization is just as evil as he claims MoveOn to be?

Dunthinkso.

19. Notice that he said "order" first.
That is what is most important to Authoritarian RWing so called- Christians. If he claims that god spoke to him then he needs to be in a Mental Ward for a year or two then he can go to prison for ten years where he also belongs.

When a politician says he speaks to god and asks for guidance, it means he's a religious person.

When a politician says he's important enough that god speaks to him, it means he's crazy.

25. I cracked up when I saw that subject line--actually laughed out loud!
Tom Delay: "God has spoken to me."

Because I don't think Tom DeLay would want to hear what God had to say to him if it ever actually happened. In fact, I don't think Tom DeLay WOULD hear it. He doesn't seem like the type who'd be affinitized to the "still, small voice."

RELIGION is truly the last refuge of a scoundrel, although patriotism is a close runner-up.

26. It's easy to misinterpret God when you're so full of yourself.
Has it been questioned and then confirmed? Has anyone with the gift of discernment been praying over it? He needs to do it right and make sure, rather than just assume that what he thought up came from God.

31. In certain circles, like various groups of mental health professionals,...
...talking to god, or worse yet, getting personalized answers, is called schizophrenia. Apparently, in parts of Texas, it's just called that ol' time religion and the more bat shit loony you are over this ridiculous bible thumping psychosis, the better pew you get on Sunday.

This goes well with yesterday's thread about the unprecedentedly high levels of religiosity in this country, found nowhere else on earth except in primitive hunter-gatherer societies -- and their gods tend to be nice guys or women who represent natural phenomena or various animal species.

This is sharp contrast to the vicious, vindictive, petty, violent, mass-murderer of a god who, for example, slew an entire tribe because one of its members (Onan) "spilled his seed on the ground." So the lesson is clear: jerk off and condemn your entire society to death. Nice guy, that god, and so reasonable, too.

And how lucky for us to live in a country founded on principles embraced by religious maniacs, such as burning witches (because they hated and feared powerful women) and saw nothing wrong with perpetrating genocide -- the European 16th Century imperialists' favorite pastime -- on around 15 million indigenous North American people who couldn't compete with "guns, germs and steel," as Jared Diamond puts it.

Contrast that with Australia, a country founded by convicts and other social misfits, who seem more interested in having a good time than in repressing anyone -- at least once they got done with the traditional extermination of indigenous peoples, in this case the ancient Aboriginals, some of whom happened to like the same places the "settlers" did -- with predictably fatal results.
