7. You know, I'm not sure I could even tell you what that movie is about, but
I love it. I think it's the music--it's very different and sets a very definite tone.

Linda Hunt was wonderful--for years I never knew she was a woman.

9. The movie is about the atmosphere in a country (any country) in the days
leading up to a coup.. and how people get swept up into things..

18. Yep...we aren't "quite there, yet" ....but getting there...and that's why it's
a cautionary tale. When I first saw it years ago...it seemed to be a story about "Third World Politics."

Little did I know that 30 years of something later...we might find that movie VERY REAL for America..:-(

Whatever...it's worth a watch for those who get "Nuanced" or even "In your Face," who are sensitive enough with some historical background to GET IT....

17. Summing it up? "HOPE OF THE PEOPLE...Dashed." That's what it's
about. And, it would seem Very Current given what's going on in the world today...even though it's old.

19. Spoiler
the end-when Billy hung the sign urging Sukarno to feed his people, was killed, and had the look of utter content on his face while he died did it for me.

11. Sountrack by Maurice Jarre, for those who might be interested...
Edited on Tue May-29-07 07:35 PM by Innoma
I have a very long-standing, personal affection for this movie on many levels: it was directly responsible for starting an interest in 'world' music at a fairly young age; it generated an ongoing interest in Indonesia history and culture; and I first saw it at a time of great upheaval in my love life. That last may not seem particularly relevant, but over a decade later, at a point when I felt my 'romantic options' were all but over, I met and married a fantastic Indonesian girl who I got to know precisely because that movie I had seen so many years ago provided me with a sort of groundwork that let me get to know her a little better than I might have been able to otherwise.

The movie is quite a bit different than the book which spawned it, but still one of my favorite films about a country with a very interesting history.

On Edit: The musical theme used when Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver have their 'romantic moment' is "L'enfant" by Vangelis (from the 1979 album of his entitled "Opera Sauvage"), rather than Maurice Jarre.

20. Sukarno! Feed your people!
Whenever I see that scene, I'm reminded of how dictators deal with dissent. Quickly, bloodily - then clean the mess up quickly and never let it be mentioned again.

Except for the few witnesses who spread the story....
