Forget about her, the anti-war movement will do fine without her. And so will Democrats, thank you very much. Maybe this hero worship and elevating to god-status by misguided people on the left is part of the reason she quit. Must be a lot of pressure when so many people feel you are perfect and can do no wrong. No wonder she wanted out of the spotlight.
Leave her in peace and she will quietly fade away and it will be better for her that way as well as the Democrats.

Seriously. This is not a flame or a comment against you. However, there is clearly a divide here. Either some of us are missing something wonderful that we're just not aware of or some of us are posting hyperbole.
Would someone start a thread solely about what she has accomplished? (Not a flamebait thread, but an educational one).

Frankly, I don't think DU needs another Cindy Sheehan thread. I would just say this: DU, a website with thousands and thousands of members, has been talking about her non-stop for two days. How can it be denied that she made an impact? If the person who posted the ignorant, spiteful comment above that "1% of 0 is still 0" left DU tomorrow, nobody would talk about him/her. Almost no one would even notice. I strongly suspect that the same could be said of their "real life." The "hyperbole" that Sheehan did nothing is simply ridiculous.
I have a son. If something happened to him, I would collapse. I would go into some internal hole and never come out. Cindy took that same despair and turned it into a positive force. The whole world noticed her, and they are noticing her still.
I will NEVER, EVER accomplish as much in my life as she has in hers.
Edited to keep this from being deleted.

|
I'm not sure her impact lately has been that huge.
But then, her impact initially WAS huge, and most folks don't even get that much. Nothing since has matched her original Crawford protest.
I wonder if folks have really been paying as much attention to her since then as some here still do.
I don't know actually. I'd be interested to hear from folks around the country as to how much Cindy still affects them.

34. She put a humanized face on the peace movement, and shouldn't give up on that... |
|
The mistake many people are making is that, for Cindy and most peace activists, they thought the Democratic party was the best way to actually HAVE peace in Iraq. Unfortunately, they overestimated the Democrats' and their values, and hence the Democratic party betrayed them. But it was never Cindy's intention to advance the Democratic party agenda just so the Democrats would win in 2006, but to win and END THE DAMNED WAR! She didn't join the anti-war movement for the Democratic party's sake, but for peace, no more no less, too bad some party loyalists can't see that.

|
It is DEMOCRATIC Underground.
That's nothing against Cindy or anti-war activists per se, just that you shouldn't be surprised to find a few Democratic Party "party loyalists" here at DU.
Oh, and I initially wrote "peace activists" but changed it to "anti-war activists", because - imo - a good portion of the current anti-war movement consists of people who by their actions and rhetoric show that they are no way, no how "peace activists." In my VERY humble opinion, I think this may be part of the problem. Just maybe.
"There is no way to peace. Peace is the way." ~ source escapes me right now.

I am saying one should not be surprised that Democratic Party "loyalists", or people who are generally supportive of the Democratic Party (and thus opposed to those who trash that Party) are here.
But are you telling me to "go away, we don't want your kind here?" (Never mind that you apparently drew an incorrect conclusion about "my kind" from my post. But miscommunication is how a lot of bad things start.)
That's kind of an example of what I mean by the difference between an "anti-war activist" and a "peace activist."
edit for typo.

I do not consider criticism "trashing", unless it, like much that has been posted towards varied individuals recently, is for the purpose of trashing. I consider myself generally supportive of the Democratic Party, but reserve the right to criticize the hell out of them when they mess up. If you represent me, you are going to hear from me.

I'm just saying, don't be surprised that some members of DEMOCRATIC Underground put the DEMOCRATIC Party ahead of following in "lockstep" what some antiwar activists want, or ahead of kowtowing to those activists.
Both are welcome here, I am sure...but I don't think folks who tear down the Democratic Party should expect to be treated with kid gloves by everyone here.
There are ways to achieve our common goals. Then there are ways to drive wedges when one doesn't get everything one thinks one wants.
Everyone gets to choose which way they will strive to be.

I think MH1 was saying that there's room on DU for both people who consider themselves "Democrats first" and people who consider themselves " 'progressives' first."
You, apparently, disagree, since you are making cute little jokes implying that MH1 is some kind of Rahm Emmanuel robot.
Why can't you just discuss things civilly without resorting to little implications that people who disagree with you are trolls? No, not everyone here puts their opposition to the war above their membership as a Democrat. Many people are concerned with other issues besides the war and still believe that the Democratic party is the best way through which to achieve liberal goals in politics. You are perfectly free to believe otherwise, but to imply that Democrats of all stripes - even ones who disagree with the latest anti-war sloganeering - are unwelcome at Democratic Underground is ridiculous.

68. Good luck to you with this one, quinnox. |
|
One thing I've learned over the past few days is that Cindy Sheehan means different things to different people.
There are some that know her personally, so can't imagine that anyone who doesn't know her personally wouldn't already know how personally wonderful she apparently is. Of course she's great. She's their friend. Who wouldn't aggressively defend their friends?
Then there are some who view her as an icon. She's apparently done what they wish they were doing (and assume that everyone else is not doing). Thus, all the "she's done everything ever and you've done nothing" retorts. This is the group that will light the torches for a witchhunt, because apparently anyone thinking anything more complex than sheer worship is sexist, a warmongerer, or a troll. They must be, or their cult is meaningless.
Then there are some people that see her as a person. She's tired. She's not perfect. She needs time off. That's all.
Then there are people that don't see her as the embodiment of the anti-war movement. She's a part of it, of course, but certainly not everything. It existed before her and will exist after.
Then there are people that are visiting from nameless sites and freeperdom, who are enjoying the controversy.
---
To be honest, I don't see Cindy Sheehan as the face of the anti-war movement. I don't think she's been particularly successful at changing votes or practices or discourse in this country. (*cue true believers*). But she obviously means a lot to some people, though I think it's the height of hyperbole to compare her to anyone that has been tortured or created real change. So, let them form their happy fun threads sending roses and begging her to come back. Meh.
