Whale-rescue hot line hacked; message says whales were killed

(05-29) 17:30 PDT RICHMOND -- A telephone hot line set up to receive public comment on the humpback whale rescue effort has been hacked into, and a new message erroneously tells callers that the whales have been killed.

Workers on the whale-rescue effort didn't know about the problem, but said they had not been able to get into the voice-mail system all day. They are trying to fix the problem.

They said the whale-rescue attempt has not been stopped, and the whales have not been euthanized.

The whales are swimming near the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, about 7 miles from the Golden Gate Bridge.
