Mr. Vice President Gore, My Tribute To Your Potential Presidential Campaign (A Photo Essay)
Edited on Tue May-29-07 09:23 PM by berni_mccoy
Mr. Vice President,

Others have said you would be much more effective as you currently are now instead of as the President. Let me share with you why I believe this is wrong. I believe that the Power of the Presidency is greater than many want to admit. Instead of showing the many destructive and negative ways the Presidency can be incredibly influential, which I could easily do using Bush as an example, let me share with you a positive story of the power of the Presidency.

It was last spring when my family went to the Kennedy Presidential Library in Massachusetts.

We saw many things. We saw Kennedy's life of service to his country, from Soldier to Representative to President. We saw even in the short time he was in office as President, that he accomplished many great things, including great strides in the Civil Rights Movement, Human Rights and the Establishment of the Peace Corps, The Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, The Space Program, not to mention he saved us from destruction during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

We can see that not only did he accomplish great things, but he inspired great hope in all, especially the youth of the country. He still does today.

We could not help but be brought to tears at the Library when we saw his memorial. But even so, his Hope was evident in his words: "A man may die, nations may rise and fall, but an idea lives on."

You, Mr. Vice President, are the best hope incarnate of those ideas that Americans so very much cherish. Americans regret the 2000 election. Americans longs for history to be corrected. Americans believe that one man can make a difference. Americans believe that man is you. We need someone with the courage to stand up and do what is right. There is so very much work to be done and those in power refuse to do it. Much, much work is to be done.

I remember, in early 2000, you came to a town hall meeting near me and I attended to hear what you had to say.

I was impressed that instead of talking over us, you first, listened to the people.

You listened to everyone, even the children.

And instead of feeding us political spin, one-liners and dumb jokes, you held a dialog with us on how, we as a people, can solve the problems that concern us. How, you as President will work with the people to solve the problems that need solving.

I was lucky enough to meet you and shake your hand. You earned not only my vote and respect that night, but you also gave me hope, the same hope that I felt admiring President Kennedy's great works.

Mr. Vice President, if you are even considering running for President, I ask that you look upon the great works of past Presidents who have accomplished great things and look at the disasters caused by terrible presidents and I ask that you please consider running. Americans know that you will be great. The time is now. I do not ask this of you lightly and I will willingly ask you what I can do for my country if you do so choose to run. Mr. Vice President, won't you please help us help America?

Author's Note: these are actual photos I took.

2. I saw him on Countdown this evening
He was very impressive.

Among other reasons, one reason I would like to see him run is because I believe that, much moreso than in 2000, he will be more effective in getting his message out this time around. Our corporate media castigated him repeatedly, and in his efforts to avoid being seen as too aggressive, he took it. I believe that he is wiser and looser now. One thing I would just love to see is for him to go on Meet the Press and tear that flaming hypocrite Tim Russert to shreds. He can do it if anybody can.

21. Al Gore is the best person for the job
I hope that during the summer he will think about the possibility of seeking the nomination.

My first choice ticket is Gore-Obama. Second choice would be Edwards-Obama. Then Obama for prez in 2016.

But I'm not anti-Hillary, and I would be happy to see her replace Harry Reid as Senate Majority Leader.

THE LAST TEMPTATION OF AL GORE
By Eric Pooley
TIME Magazine -- May 17, 2007

Let's say you were dreaming up the perfect stealth candidate for 2008, a Democrat who could step into the presidential race when the party confronts its inevitable doubts about the front runners. You would want a candidate with the grass-roots appeal of Barack Obama -- someone with a message that transcends politics, someone who spoke out loud and clear and early against the war in Iraq. But you would also want a candidate with the operational toughness of Hillary Clinton -- someone with experience and credibility on the world stage.
In other words, you would want someone like Al Gore -- the improbably charismatic, Academy Award-winning, Nobel Prize-nominated environmental prophet with an army of followers and huge reserves of political and cultural capital at his command.

22. Berni, you single-handedly will be responsible for Al Gore joining the race.
All the pundits will ask, "What was the turning point, Al?" He will look down for a moment, ponder how best to answer the question, and then he will say, "It was a moving tribute on Democratic Underground to one of our greatest presidents, John F. Kennedy. When I read the post by Berni McCoy, I was reminded that duty calls the strongest when the nation's needs are greatest."

===================

We will all owe you an endless debt of gratitude on Inauguration Day, January 2009, when Al Gore raises his hand to be sworn in as the first honestly elected president since Bill Clinton.

*sigh* I can dream.

Great post, wonderful photos. It's amazing how much humanity streams forth from Al Gore's face.

23. I'm honored by your words.
Thank you very much. I'm sure whatever this message does will be a minute factor in his decision making process... but still it will be something.

I hope that he does decide to run, and I will do whatever he asks of us to make this world a better place (as I am doing now by reducing my CO2 footrpint).

25. It was a little tongue-in-cheek, but sincere.
I believe Al Gore will run, if his heart tells him that is his duty to his country. It is people like you who are writing those words in his heart.

26. He looks like he's lost some weight there. He looks terrific.
God, I hope this means he's planning on running.

He could weigh 400 pounds and have really bad skin, and he would still be an incredible President. But, given the shallowness of our American electorate, I think it will help if Mr. Gore is at his fightin' weight for the campaign.

28. Sorry, those photos of Gore are from 2000, not recent photos.
As much as I want the weight loss to be an indicator of his running for President, I can not say what he has/has not lost recently. As you said, I don't really care how much he weighs. He's the right President for America.

He will take his rightful place as our leader and I have no doubt he will make us as proud to be Americans as JFK did.

Great post.

Only, based on the abuses and crimes the American people have allowed these last seven years, I am finding it more difficult to understand what they believe in anymore.

33. I wish we could get him to run he would be the best candidate PERIOD.
Maybe we could regain some face with him as president the job that was stolen from him in 2000.

The next photos I took at Manzannar if we don't restore our democracy these camps will be the norm here in the US again

So many would back him

Keep in mind this is a National Park Service Museum

We don't want to continue these marches forever in the Bush Orwellian rule of our country!
