GIs Take Manhattan
GIs take Manhattan: Operation First Casualty

"The adage “in war, truth is the first casualty” is generally attributed to the ancient Greek playwrite Aeschylus, and the words still ring true a few millenia later.

Over Memorial Day weekend 2007, members of Iraq Veterans Against the War revived Aeschylus’ saying with Operation First Casualty. Simulating sniper fire and mass detentions on the streets of Manhattan, these antiwar veterans brought home a small piece of the Iraq War, and the meerkats were there to film it."

2. One of the people involved in this is Adam Kokesh.
He's one of the people the military is trying to retroactively change the discharge papers for - trying to revoke the honorable discharge because they've been speaking out against the war. I'm glad to see he's not caving.

A little more from the IVAW site: "In full uniform IVAW members performed searches, detentions, squad patrol, and crowd control operations in locations that included Central Park, Times Square, Union Square and Grand Army Plaza. They also stopped at Ground Zero for a solemn ceremony."

I heard they are planning a similar action in Chicago.

to volunteer to participate in this? If they came to Austin I would take off work to be part of something like this. Fucking brilliant.

5. Their next action is in Chicago, June 17-18
I don't know of any others like this that they have planned, but you could email them: http://www.ivaw.org/contact and let them know if you're interested in hosting IVAW members who visit your city, or working with them if there is something similar in your area. (I know from talking to them they've been crazy busy lately, so if you don't get an immediate answer, try to be understanding.)
