Biden has a workable Iraq plan

September 1, 2007

I was an outspoken opponent of this administration's plans to invade Iraq, and like many Americans, I wish we were not there. However, I strongly agree with the Aug. 19 letter from Iraq veterans ("Democrats' Vote Against Funding Could Cost Military Lives - and the Election").

In his vote for this spring's Iraq supplemental-funding bill, U.S. Sen. Joe Biden demonstrated integrity and an understanding of the difference between governing and posturing. As someone who remembers being a 23-year-old private first class in Vietnam, I appreciate his concern for the safety of our soldiers shown through his efforts to obtain funding for the mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles.

Among the contenders for nomination for president, Biden stands out for his leadership in working for a responsible resolution to the current quagmire in Iraq.

- Alan Charlson,
Waverly.

From Napa Valley!

Biden fills the bill
Sunday, September 02, 2007
Dear editor, I have heard and seen Sen. Joe Biden interviewed and am quite impressed by the depth and breadth of his experience, knowledge and convictions.

His scope, understanding and comprehension of politics and foreign policy, as well as the many needs and problems facing our country today, gives me a feeling of excitement that a man of his abilities is running for president.

I’ve read his book “Promises to Keep” and am so thankful for the opportunity. I want to offer my recommendation that it be read by everyone. (It’s enjoyable, too.)

I’m 86 years old and have always lived with the idea that whoever is elected will do his best and grow into the office. I’m sure Hillary would — I’m just not sure she could be as strong as the problems facing a president today require. As for Obama — he is a brave and admirable young man, but this is not the time for his inexperience. He leaves me feeling apprehensive. I would hope he would run again in the future.

All the candidates in the running, I’m sure, are able and capable, but I feel strongly Mr. Biden fills the bill and fits the needs at this precarious period in our history.
