New Bulwark to ponder.
48percenter suggested in the rockery post that we continue this game, and nominated me to do the next word. I loved the post by VI with the simple Bulwark exclamation, so I propose we call all future quests the Bulwarks.

Anyway this one might be easy, but it was the first thing I thought of, as it's one of my favorite newly discovered words.

Some might be tempted to call our current government this, and it's not "a disaster". So what's my word?

1. Great idea
Now we have our own "in word" and it has nothing to do with where we live. Just woke up, so have to think on this one.

Edited on Sat Apr-26-08 02:10 PM by JoeIsOneOfUs
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kleptocracy

"...A kleptocracy (sometimes cleptocracy) (root: klepto+kratein = rule by thieves) is a term applied to a government that extends the personal wealth and political power of government officials and the ruling class (collectively, kleptocrats) at the expense of the population. A kleptocratic government often goes beyond merely awarding the prime contracts and civil service posts to friends (a common feature of corrupt governments). They also create projects and programs at a policy level which serve the primary purpose of funneling money out of the treasury and into the pockets of the executive with little if any regard for the logic, viability or necessity of those projects..."

MY new favorite word, plus ochlochracy (mob rule)

Kakistocracy is government by the very worst, most unscrupulous, most evil, or least qualified that a nation has to offer. It is government by very, very, very baaaadd to the bone, worst elements of society.

Here is your prize...a little something from Google Images.

42. Plutocracy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plutocracy

snip...

Plutocracy is the rule or power through wealth or by the wealthy. In a plutocracy, the degree of economic inequality is high while the level of social mobility is low. This can apply to a multitude of government systems, as the key elements of plutocracy transcend and often occur concurrently with the features of those systems. The word plutocracy (Modern Greek: πλουτοκρατία - ploutokratia) is derived from the ancient Greek root ploutos, meaning wealth and kratein, meaning to rule or to govern.

Actually, that's not where I found the word. The first time I heard the word was on DU last year. I was so impressed with it as a perfect way to describe the lying weasel, etc. that I made a small poster of it with its definition. I have it posted in my classroom, along with some other small posters of words of wisdom. I haven't been called on it, yet, but I guess to call me on it would be to admit that it's critical of our current administration, which could be construed as sharing the same thoughts, eh?

Aren't some of those government words a hoot? It would be fun to add more to the list:

duckocracy: government that consistently dodges the main issues

rockeryocracy: government formed by layers or tiers, without any cementing bonds between them. Held together only by the oppressive weight of the upper layer.

spongeocracy: government that frequently absorbs the messes made by itself. Cleanup is usually incomplete, and left for others to finish the job.

volcanicocracy: government on the verge of exploding
