I can't imagine what it would be like to understand/speak another language. I'm a firm believer that language should be required all through school (don't they do that in Europe?)
I took a smattering of required language in HS - just a year -- but it was things like "I take the book off the table, I put the book in the drawer." Not good enough to get me through Paris and the south of France.

with English. And then as they get a little older they can take other languages too. It is not uncommon for the average educated German to speak 3 or 4 languages. Maybe not all fluently (except for English) but hey, it's better the pablum we get in the US.
