Glad to see the new group.
I'm supporting anyone just yet. As you can see from the avatar, I'm still hoping, but I wish you all the best.

I did want to tell you, Senator Biden has always held a special place in my heart. In the autumn of 1972, amid all the war protests, I was co-ordinating a district office, in Ohio, for McGovern for President. We had just opened our storefront and were preparing the windows, when we received news that Biden's wife and daughter had been killed in an auto accident. We immediately scraped our window plans and posted condolence notes on the windows. Many people stopped to read and many came in to write and sign their own notes to add.

Over the years, every time I see the Senator on television, I have a flash of that window and the ache we felt for him and his family. I'm so thankful, he stay in there. He's one of our treasures.

1. Thanks for sharing that story.
Very touching!

And thanks for stopping by:hi:

I bet Clark is going to be part of the next administration.
His knowledge is very much needed right now.
Even in '04, I was hoping Kerry would have chosen him for his running mate.

I wonder if he was on Kerry's short list.

3. I was in Texas when McGovern was running
and we were heartbroken when he lost. Brings back old memories.

I don't remember Joe Biden from those days, but we were traveling and weren't too current on a lot of the political news of the time, at least not until Watergate. Thanks for the touching story. and thanks for dropping in and sharing!

4. I'm in Texas now.
It was all so many years ago, I'm a bit fuzzy on details, but after posting, I got thinking and it may have been later in 1972. A wonderful gentleman owned the building where our office was and gave it to us until the end of the year. I know we continued to use it for those last two months for anti-war messages and it wasn't until after the election that a few people started paying attention to the word "Watergate". So, it was at some point in the autumn of 1972 where we kept those windows a reminder to everyone who passed.

I don't recall knowing anything more than the name Senator Biden at the time. However, we quickly learned, he was not only our kind of Democrat, young and idealistic, with dreams, he also was working IN the system. He was a contemporary for many of us who also had toddlers, so the newspaper and television pictures, after the accident, of him and his beautiful family caused a real rush of kinship.

Actually, a few of those volunteers went on to follow in his footsteps and run for and hold public office. One of the slightly "younger" ones, is now Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio.

7. Oh, you're bringing back memories
It was a unique time to be alive. Things got pretty boring later though.

I guess Senator Biden wouldn't have been too well known at the time as he'd just gotten elected to the Senate right before his wife and daughter died. I'm just reading the part in his book when he first met his wife.
