Chávez Reaches Out to Obama Ahead of Vote
By SIMON ROMERO

~snip~
“Any day is propitious for talking with President Barack Obama,” Mr. Chávez said at a news conference here with foreign journalists ahead of a referendum on Sunday that could open the way for him to hold on to power indefinitely. Mr. Chávez said he would be willing to meet with Mr. Obama before a summit meeting in April of Western Hemisphere nations. The White House has not yet responded.

Mr. Chávez initially expressed optimism over Mr. Obama’s electoral victory and a willingness to re-engage with the United States. But Mr. Chávez cooled to Mr. Obama in January after the American leader voiced concern over reports of Venezuelan assistance to Colombian guerrillas. Ties between the two nations had deteriorated sharply in 2008.

The Obama administration seems to have adopted a nonbombastic approach to dealing with Venezuela, even as it was faced with questions over a referendum campaign here which had been marked by attacks by pro-Chávez partisans on institutions viewed as critical of Mr. Chávez, like the Israeli Embassy and the Vatican’s diplomatic mission, and threats against prominent opponents of the president.

“That’s an internal matter with regard to Venezuela,” Robert Wood, a State Department spokesman, said when asked this month about the referendum.

1. Although I'm on to corporate media's pre-written narratives, it still shocks me when
a high-paid corporate 'call girl' like Simon Romero does his fawning chit-chat at the table and leg-rubbing under it. The string of lies he runs together just in the paragraphs cited above is breathtaking...

"...that could open the way for him to hold on to power indefinitely."

Chavez 'holds power' by leave of the Venezuelan people, in elections that are far, far more transparent and aboveboard than our own. Like our own FDR, who ran for and won four terms in office, Chavez wants to run for another term. The Venezuelan voters--who have voted for him a total of four times, with increasing margins of victory (including his initial win in 1998, a re-vote after the new Constitution was passed in 2000, a U.S.-funded recall election in 2004, and the last, 2006, which he won with 63% of the vote--have sole control over whether Chavez gets a third full term. If they don't vote for him, then he doesn't get to "hold power indefinitely" or even for another term.

"...Obama voiced concern over reports of Venezuelan assistance to Colombian guerrillas.

How to disentangle this vague and slanderous adjunct to Bushwhack psyops? Bush's buddy, Colombia's so-called president, Uribe--a drug mafia don with close ties to rightwing death squads--asked Chavez to negotiate with the FARC guerrillas for hostages releases; when Chavez did so, the Colombian military, whose activities are orchestrated out of the U.S. embassy "war room" in Bogota, rained rocket fire on the hostages' location, as they were on route to their freedom, driving them back into the jungle. (Chavez eventually got them out by a different route). There is good reason to believe that Donald Rumsfeld himself was directing these treacherous dirty tricks, to ensnare Chavez in Colombia's 40+ year civil war. I won't tell the whole tale here. Suffice it to say this U.S. "war" on Chavez has strengthened Chavez's friendships and alliances in South America, whose leaders support him and praise him, because they know that all this U.S. crap about Chavez is false, and they also know that they could be next. I don't know who advised Obama to repeat some of this slander, but if Obama keeps it up, he can kiss South America good-bye as a partner in economic recovery for the rest of the century.

"Ties between the two nations had deteriorated sharply in 2008."

If Romero means Colombia and Venezuela (in this sloppily written paragraph), yeah, Colombia's midnight bombing of a FARC hostage release camp just inside Ecuador's border--Ecuador is a strong ally of Venezuela--using 10 U.S. "smart bombs," U.S. high tech surveillance and probably a U.S. plane and pilot out of the U.S. military base in Manta, Ecuador, and Colombia/U.S. forces crossing into Ecuador to shoot any of the sleeping survivors in the back (25 people killed, including FARC's chief hostage negotiator, and an Ecuadoran citizen), was designed (by Rumsfeld?) to start a war between Colombia and Ecuador/Venezuela. "Deteriorated," indeed. It was only by brilliant and heroic diplomacy that Chavez averted that war. Lula da Silva, president of Brazil, called Chavez "the great peacemaker" speaking of those events.

Obama needs to find out what the Bushwhacks, the U.S. military and Blackwater have been doing in our name in Colombia--and what "Bays of Pigs" may be laying in wait to sabotage his administration. And this lying whore at the NYT is not helping him do that.

"...even as (the Obama administration) was faced with questions over a referendum campaign here which had been marked by attacks by pro-Chávez partisans on institutions viewed as critical of Mr. Chávez, like the Israeli Embassy and the Vatican’s diplomatic mission, and threats against prominent opponents of the president."

"Faced with questions"? These are not "questions." There were protests at Israeli embassies all over the world during Israel's bombing of Gaza. And, gee, Chavez is such a "dictator," he lets people protest--which they do quite freely in Venezuela on all sides of controversial issues. These "questions" are bullshit. And the first two of these "questions" furthermore have nothing whatever to do with the referendum on term limits!

"...threats against prominent opponents of the president."

Romero is just stringing together every unsubstantiated "talking point" of the Miami anti-Castro mafia and the Bushwhack CIA. No specifics, because details would reveal the crapola he is talking about. "Prominent opponents of the president" were caught attending a meeting in U.S. territory Puerto Rico, conspiring with U.S. (Bushwhack) diplomats to obtain $3 million from the U.S. to oppose the referendum, and strategizing to defeat it. This is in violation of Venezuelan law. This meeting is under investigation. Is this what Romero is referring to? Probably. He doesn't detail it because it indicts the U.S. in the commission of a crime.

"The Obama administration seems to have adopted a nonbombastic approach to dealing with Venezuela..."

Robert Woods' statement points that way--and I hope it's true--but Obama's very ill-considered, undiplomatic statements about Chavez during Obama's inauguration week--accusing Chavez of having ties to the FARC (Rumsfeld must be grinning), and of being "bad for the progress of the region" are not exactly "nonbombastic." Interesting word, though--bombastic. Does that mean that the Bushwhacks were full of shit when it came to Chavez?
