Yes, The New York Times is indeed "Leaving the Past Behind" when it lies again and again about the U.S. invasion of Grenada in October 1983. It's not that the Times has never printed the truth about that invasion, facts that can easily be accessed by its current editors.

On November 6, 1983, a full-page article by Stuart Taylor Jr. described "inaccurate information" and "unproven assertions" disseminated by U.S. civilian and military officials during the invasion of Grenada. Then, on November 20, Cuba itself took out ads in The New York Times and other major U.S. newspapers for publication of a November 14 speech by President Fidel Castro in which he listed 19 lies told to justify the invasion and refuted each lie. For more about the true history of the invasion of Grenada, please see "Cuba and the United States: A Chronological History" at my homepage.

On February 8, the Travel section of the Times produced an article with the ironic title, "In Grenada, Leaving the Past Behind" that even claims that Cuba supported the coup against Maurice Bishop, an extraordinary lie. In response, Bob Guild of Marazul Tours wrote a letter to the Times, but of course the letter has not been published; so I am disseminating it here and hope others will spread it even further. The Times article can be accessed through the link below.

To the Editor

Re: "In Grenada, Leaving the Past Behind"- February 8, 2009

I was surprised to read a fictionalized account of the U.S. invasion of Grenada 25 years ago. As a travel agent I was there two weeks before the invasion, arranging the arrival of the first non-stop tourist flights from New York to the new airport being built at Point Salines. It was not a secret 'hostile military base' 'detected by satellite'; it was the replacement for an antiquated field on the other side of the island which was too small for modern jets. We toured the new airport site and had a wonderful dinner with Grenadian and Cuban construction workers helping build this essential addition to the Grenadian tourist infrastructure. As far as the Cubans supporting the coup, it was just the opposite: Cuba supported the Grenadian prime minister Maurice Bishop and condemned the coup. It is indeed an irony that U.S. tourists now enjoy this beautiful island thanks to its accessibility provided by Point Salines Airport constructed with the assistance of Cuba.
