Telesur TV Reporting that Possibly 7 Journalists from Telesur and VTV were arrested this morning
Edited on Sun Jul-12-09 10:10 AM by magbana
If you go to the Telesur site: http://www.telesurtv.net/noticias/canal/senalenvivo.php there is a video on the right hand side about the arrests. I listened for a short while. The video features Edurardo Silvera in audio only reporting that "we" have been arrested without cause and that "our" passports have been taken.

I first learned of this story from Inca Kola News:

Seven foreign journalists arrested in Honduras

excerpt:

The news is that in the early hours of Sunday morning, Honduran National Police arrested two reporters, one technician and four camera crew from Telesur and VTV, and took them to an (as yet) unknown destination. Sorry, no link yet...I was e-mailed on this one.

1. Bolivarian News Agency Report of Journalists Detained (spanish)
It looks like they were freed through the intervention of Venezuelan FM Nicolas Maduro. The Telesur folks are at the Venezuela embassy and the VTV are back at the hotel where they were originally staying. Supposedly they will be deported this afternoon.

Caracas.

Imagen de muestraCaracas, Jul 12 (Prensa Latina) The President of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights Luz Patricia Mejia denounced Tele Sur and Venezolana de Television (VTV) teams have been detained by armed forces, placed under arrest and later released on Saturday night.

Mejia in interview with Venezolana de Television TV said it is very important right now to keep telling the world the real truth about events of this kind, because it happened when the whole continent was sleeping.

"It's necessary to let the world and Honduran people know what it's really happening in that country", she indicated.

Freedom of speech is a right of all peoples, and since June 28 the de-facto regime in Honduras has done a lot to hide the real truth, she stressed.

All international organizations of human rights will look after Telesur and Venezolana de Television teams welfare.

The reporters were released hours after coup forces gave a detailed check on their identification documents and under clear orders of immediately abandoning the country.

This is the second arrest of a group of Venezuelan media, on June 29 coup forces detained Venezolana de Television team, which provided non-stop coverage on the massive repression from army and police forces during a pacific demo in Honduras.

Telesur and Venezolana de Television team, which has been the only media outlet to provide non-stop coverage on the coup in Honduras, has just been the victim of violent repression in Honduras.
