Good news: Bolivia about to get an outlet to the sea

And it is NOT the Pacific, but the Atlantic.

During a state visit today (Monday) to Montevideo, Evo and Tabaré Vázquez reached an agreement in principal in which Uruguay will allow Bolivian exports to the Atlantic via the Uruguay River. The foreign ministers of both countries were instructed to come up with a formal treaty as soon as possible.

The deal will allow Bolivia to use the river port of Nueva Palmira and the port of Montevideo to export, among other things, iron, manganese and other products to the Atlantic. Bolivia will have Free Port priviledges.

(Uruguay river, 1,000 miles (1,610 km) long, rising in South Brazil and flowing in an arc West, Southwest, and South to the Río de la Plata, an estuary; it forms part of the Brazil-Argentina border and most of the Argentina-Uruguay line.)

1. Good grief! How wonderful! Necessity is the mother of invention, along with kindness in this case.
This is absolutely amazing, isn't it? I've been reading about this problem so long.

Here's a map of Uruguay: I see Nueva Palmira is north of Buenos Aires:

This looks very good for the priceless Evo Morales, who, although he hasn't involved himself in massacres, like Goni, or Banzer, or the others, nor had any Nazis helping in his government, just managed to get serious attention from Chile, and perhaps from Two Breakfasts Garcia, just may be working on a miracle with Vasquez. Will be hoping so hard for this to work.

Thanks for breaking the news to us, rabs. If this works out, there will be so MANY, many happy, proud, and thankful Bolivian people!

2. It took two lefties to resolve Bolivia's festering problem

Actually Michelle and Evo were making progress to allow Boliva access to the Pacific until early this year, (or late last year) when Alan Garcia messed everything up by presenting a maritime territorial claim against Chile at the World Court at The Hague.

Peru's claim overlaps part of what used to be Bolivia's Litoral, the coastal territory that it lost in the Saltpeter War.

Incidentally, on related topic, the AP and others like to harp that Paraguay too is landlocked. Totally false. Or else the ocean-going freighters I saw docked at the port of Asuncion were ghost ships.

Paraguay has two main ports on the Paraguay River with access to the Atlantic, Asuncion the capital, and further downriver the port of Encarnacion. There are some other smaller ports scattered along the river.

Used to make for some great smuggling when I was there many years ago.

3. AP and other "news" services have fallen away from providing a respectable service, haven't they?
What good are they when they don't actually make the world honestly more comprehensible?

People are going to start learning the hard way more is required of them now to get a clearer picture of events.

I saw a little about those plans getting squashed by Two Breakfasts. It takes a real sadistic creep to do something like that. Someone capable of ordering his miltary to fire down upon protesters from helicopters.

Uruguay River is beautiful!
