acnnews 6 Hondurans Intensify Protests after Zelaya Announced Return
HAVANA, Cuba, July 20 (acn) The Honduran people intensified protests on Monday following the announcement on Sunday by constitutional President Manuel Zelaya that he will return to his country next weekend. Protests were reinforced with a huge demonstration in front of the National Congress early on Monday while a meeting of the labor sector was called for later today to organize a general stoppage for next Thursday and Friday, the Bolivarian News Agency reported. The dialog held in Costa Rica between delegations from the de facto government in Honduras and the constitutional government of that country concluded after the representatives of the coup perpetrators rejected a package of proposals put forth by Costa Rican President Oscar Arias, particularly the first point stating the reinstatement of President Manuel Zelaya. Following the end of the mediation by President Oscar Arias and the announcement of a 72-hour break in an effort to have the de facto government rectify its position, social forces grouped in the “Frente Nacional contra el golpe de Estado” (National Front against the Coup) are drawing up strategies to keep demanding the return of the constitutional order in Honduras. The president of the “Federacion Unitaria de Trabajadores” (Unitary Workers Federation), Juan Barahona, said that the country’s three union federations would meet on Monday to coordinate a general strike for next Thursday and Friday. Protest actions will not stop, including marches, demonstrations, seizing of bridges and blocking of roads as part of the people’s efforts to achieve the return of constitutional order and the reinstatement of President Zelaya, said Barahona. Meanwhile, the international secretary of the “Movimiento Comunal de Honduras” (Honduras’ Communal Movement), Jose Maria Meza, denounced that Washington is financing the de facto regime in Honduras, headed by Roberto Micheletti. In a phone conversation with Venezolana de Television TV station, the Honduran leader said that the US financing of Michelettin and his government is being done under the umbrella of the alleged humanitarian aid given to the country through the Soto Cano military base. As to the recently concluded dialog in Costa Rica, Meza said that social and political movements in Honduras suspected that the mediation by Costa Rica’s Oscar Arias would not reach any solution to the conflict. According to the popular leader the dialog was aimed at giving the usurpers enough time to consolidate their power. “We will keep resisting on the streets against this coup and this regime; we know they will increase police and military repression against those protesting the coup, but they will not be able to stop the struggle of the Honduran people,” said Jose Maria Meza as cited by ABN news agency.

1. So they're sneaking financial support in for the coup monsters through the air base operation. |
|
Well, it really figures, doesn't it?
Thank you for this article.
Glad the people are holding firm, hope they will somehow overcome this threat.
