Zelaya's assassination already planned
with permission granted by Washington

http://www.rlp.com.ni/noticias/general/57242

Credible sources, who remain anonymous for reasons of security, have
stated that in the next few days a plan to repress the popular
movement will be put into action by the coup government.

Part of the strategy of the ultra-right consists in the training of
120 assassins, who begin their training every day at 3:00 am in the
house of retired colonel Amilcar Zelaya, which is located in the
Amarateca neighborhood, 25 minutes from Tegucigalpa.

The house of this ex-military officer was known in the 1980's as a
torture center.

The assassins have negotiated a salary of $744 a month. This money
comes from honduran big business, and is part of an overall sum of
$319,148.00 being spent to dismantle the popular movement.

One of the principal objectives of the fascist leadership under
Micheletti is the assassination of the leadership of the high school
teachers union, the National Autonomous University of Honduras
(UNAH), and other organizations which support the return of president
Manuel Zelaya.

As part of this conspiracy they have planned an assassination attempt
against Roberto Micheletti to justify their coup and to legitimize
more arbitrary (forceful) measures against the demonstrators.

They have also infiltrated the pro-Zelaya demonstrations posing as
journalists, wearing khaki sweaters (or bullet-proof vests?).

This source indicated that this conspiracy against the people was put
in motion after the Micheletti delegation in Costa Rica broke off talks.

Assassinate Zelaya?

Enrique Santiago, an observer with the IEPALA NGO (Institute of Latin
American and African Studies), confirms that the pro-coup military
leader, General Romeo Vasquez, has organized a bloody repression
against the population set to welcome back the constitutional
president of the country, and has also ordered Zelaya's assassination.

Santiago says that according to Vasquez, Zelaya's assassination will
be the only option if the legitimate president enters Honduras.

(At this point the article quotes Santiago giving a synopsis of the
repression against the popular movement to date. He also points out
that Uribe is the only leader who has not respected the international
blockade against the honduran dictatorship).

¿Asesinar a Zelaya?

1. If this scenario is true, need to figure in Romeo Vasquez' presence in
the US and not in Honduras.

2. They're always able to find killers for hire in the poor Central American countries.
You may remember Luis Posada Carriles hired several people who carried bombs into Havana and put them in hotels, etc.
Leon Cruz was one, but there were others, including a woman.

3. Of course everyone in harm's way should be careful and vigilant, but I wonder about
spreading fear with rumors like this. The junta wants everyone to be afraid, to hide, to be silent, and above all not to band together for collective protection. Again, this is not to say that the report is wrong; we just need to be wary of fearmongering. It would be colossally stupid of Vasquez and the junta to assassinate Zelaya. Unlike Venezuela in 2002, until Chile in the 1970s and other such situations, the whole world is watching, and Honduras is surrounded by friendly leftist governments in Central America and throughout South America--with Zelaya having near universal support in the effort to fill out his term as president. Vasquez and cabal including McCain & co. have lost the media war. The OAS is not buying their crap. The EU is not buying it. The US--Obama, Clinton--at least have to say they're not buying it. Further, Zelaya has only a few months left in power as president. He is termed out. He can't run. And the left has to find a presidential candidate and run a campaign for November elections in the most difficult conditions imaginable. If they're "smart," the coupsters will let Zelaya resume his presidency, agree to some mild reforms, and then continue ruling Honduras for the "ten families" as before. It will be years before the left can win elections, with junta operatives in every branch of government, including most likely the electoral council. It's true that the coup has mobilized people, but if the coupsters are "smart," they'll wait it out and lose very little of their untoward power and wealth.

If they go the "death squad" route--even though this has been a successful route for the US-supported fascists in Colombia--it has failed everywhere else, and it requires truly massive infusions of US tax dollars--multi-billions--to maintain. Billions we don't have any more. (Colombia's getting it all--five U.S. military bases planned in Colombia! Money we already don't have--our great-great grandchildren will be paying for those bases.)

4. Honduras: Micheletti appoints death squad veteran
Honduras: Micheletti appoints death squad veteran

Submitted by WW4 Report on Fri, 07/24/2009 - 19:18. Fears that the de facto regime in Honduras is availing itself of expertise in repression from the bloody years of the 1980s were vindicated by reports that coup-installed President Roberto Micheletti has appointed as special advisor one Billy Joya Améndola—named as one of the principal leaders of the 316 Battalion death squad.

Joya Améndola, who apparently operated in the '80s as "Dr. Arranzola," is also named as a founder of the semi-official "Lince" and "Cobra" death squads. Human rights groups in Honduras charge he is responsible for at least 11 extrajudicial executions, as well as the April 1982 kidnapping and torture of six students. He apparently received training in Argentina from Gen. Guillermo Suárez Mason AKA "Pajarito"—who would later be convicted and imprisoned on charges related to 30 murders and 200 kidnappings. (See obituary, The Independent, June 23, 2005.) Joya Améndola also obtained a scholarship from the Honduran army to study in Augusto Pinochet's Chile.

The Spanish government sought the extradition of Joya Améndola various times after 1985, but the Honduran judicial system has never responded. Ironically, when a judge in Tegucigalpa issued an order for his arrest on kidnapping and torture charges in 1995, he took refuge in Spain, and remained there as an asylum applicant until he was expelled in 1998. (Gennaro Carotenuto, Italy, July 5, translated by Quotha.net)

Hugo Maldonado, director of the local Human Rights Committee in San Pedro Sula, says that the de facto regime is purging Zelaya sympathists from the security forces, and the most reactionary elements of the army are now in control. He named Joya Amendola and retired Gen. Daniel López Carballo as the men overseeing this reshaping of the security forces. (Público, Spain, July 22)

A graduate of the US Army's School of the Americas (SOA), Gen. López Carballo, told CNN that the coup was warranted because Venezuelan President Chávez would be running Honduras by proxy if the military had not acted. SOA graduates who led the coup include armed forces chief Gen. Romeo Vásquez Velásquez and air force chief Gen. Luis Prince Suazo.

SOA-trained Honduran army counsel Col. Herberth Inestroza justified the military coup in an interview with the Miami Herald, saying, "It would be difficult for us, with our training, to have a relationship with a leftist government. That's impossible." Inestroza also confirmed that the decision for the coup was made by the military. (Examiner.com, July 18)

In that same interview, Inestroza also admitted the removal of Zelaya was a "criminal" act. Yet in an interview with the New York Times days earlier, he denied that removal was a coup, or that the "rule of law" had been broken.
