Mexican billionaire urges public works

Billionaire Carlos Slim, one of the world's richest men, proposed that Mexico create a national infrastructure commission to take on what he described as $60 billion in badly needed public works projects.

Speaking before a conference of engineers Tuesday, the telecommunications magnate -- who also has business interests in construction -- said the effort would also help Mexico's economy.

Slim said it was urgent "to stimulate the domestic economy, which has been neglected, with investment in agriculture and support for small and medium businesses, and specifically by investing in the development of human and physical capital through infrastructure," said Slim.

Slim called for an independent commission that would promote mixed private and public investment in public works, and plan and develop projects.
